Lift Pump failure rate

Go figure, 65K on my truck and I figure I'd better check fuel pressure. Idle pressure AFTER the filter was 14 PSI which I am told is well within spec.



I wonder if these failures could be related to where you purchase your diesel? For example, in California I understand they have extra low sulfur diesel. Are they having more problems there?



The parts manager at the local Dodge dealer is a buddy of mine. He said so far they have had only five or six lift pump failures. Since they sell about 10 diesels per month (they sell a lot of diesels here) that is a pretty low failure rate. Only about 1. 5%.

From what I see in the forums that seems pretty low.

I think the numbers look low because most people don't have a fuel pressure gauge so can't or don't monitor their lift pump pressure. Since many trucks run fairly well even with a dead lift pump, most don't know they have a problem. It's only the "enlightened" ones on this forum who are aware of the problem. Think about it-- other than this forum, would you have known about lift pump problems. The dealer doesn't tell, Dodge doesn't, it's not a big enough problem for the media to get involved. I think if every truck was periodically checked for fuel pressure, the percentage of failures would be close to 100%.
