just a thought . you guys that have multiple lift pump failures how low do you let your fuel go in the tank? i never let it go below 1/2 a tank in my 01 had 70,000 when i traded for 02 never had a lift pump trouble . maybe running them down to empty can cause them to work extra hard and fail?:-{}

My lift pump and injection pump failed at 10,600 miles. :mad: Both were replaced. I very rarely let the tank go below 1/2 and never below 1/4.

Never let my tank get below 1/4, more often than not, I fill up around 1/2. On my '01, replaced lp at 49000. The lift pump on my'02 went at 4000 miles, and the new one put on by cummins was bad - out of the box, and the '02s are supposed to be bullet proof? Go figure.

I've let my tank get close to empty twice. :eek: The first time, I ended up having three gallons left in the tank. I was completely stock at the time. Last time I did it, there ended up being five and a half gallons of fuel left. I was close to home, but I shouldn't have done it. Most other times I fill up when the needle reads between 1/4 and 1/8 of a tank. My tank sender has been off since about 40K miles. I go by mileage and keep track of mpg's almost religiously. I've never had a lift pump problem. Knock on wood!!!

I usually wait 'til I'm at about 1/4 tank or below to fill. I have 45k on truck now and have never had a pump fail. I did, however buy a spare pump and mount my original just in front of the fuel tank. I can swap it out on the side of the road in about 5 minutes if I have to. Note, I just relocated the pump @ 44k.

Just finished lift pump replacement (1 hour)

'99 with 37,400 miles

OEM pump

idle----11 psi

cruise--8 psi

WOT---6 psi

New pump(Cummins replacement & Ray's Banjo Bolts)

idle----17 psi

cruise-14 psi

WOT---12 psi

Question:

The bolt in the VP was alot shorter that any of the new ones, so I did not replace it.

Anyone else had this problem? :confused:
