Lift pump help.....

My Dad's truck, a 1998. 5 24v is dead. I searched the archives for lift pump advice, but did not find what I needed. From what I can get from him is it was kind of missing and not running right for a couple of miles, he pulled into his driveway and it died there and will not start. Now what it is doing now..... when you turn the key to the run position where it is supposed to run for 25 seconds, the pump sometimes runs but not for 25 seconds. 10 seconds maybe. It also seems to stop when he is cranking it over, but I cant tell because of other noise. I did get fuel to the top of the filter but it will still not start. So, does this sound like a wiring or a typical lift pump going south? Last question, what is the cummins part # for the lift pump? Trying to get the parts guys around here to look them up and find them has been a very trying ordeal for me. Any help is appreciated. Oh, I don't have a fuel pressure gauge.

Well if I would have looked a little harder down the page I could have found the cummins part # 3990105. Still wonder if it is an electrical problem or the lift pump.

I had a problem with my truck running like what you were describing, only it happens only sometimes. I had a crankshaft sensor trouble code set in the ecm. You may want to check to see what is set in the ecm. This sensor would be much cheaper to replace that a pump. Since the pump on your father's truck will fill the fuel filter canister, you may want to investigate further.

Whoops!!!!!

Found out what the problem is... ... . gasoline. Already drained tank and rounding up as many jerry cans as we can and a new fuel filter and some fuel conditioner. Should be back in business in a couple of hours. It was dad's fault... . looks like mom's car is going to get a little diesel fuel! Not to worry, about 30l of diesel to about 300+ litres of gasoline.

DON"T MIX THE DIESEL FUEL WITH THE GASOLINE IN MOMS CAR!



It will do more damage to the car than it would putting gas in the diesel truck!

I have heard a rumor that diesel fuel and gasoline may spontaneously ignite when mixed. Is there any truth to that? (while we're on the topic... . )

I have never heard of that happening, having been a "Petroleum Transfer Engineer" (Gas pumper) for several years, i spilled diesel fuel into gasoline puddles many times and have never seen anything like that.
