Greetings fellow TDR members,

For those of you that have installed lift pumps on their 24 valve trucks I wanted to ask a few questions. First of all, I assume that you did the install from the top of the motor. Did you remove anything in order to make it easier to get to the pump? Also I assume that you disconnected the ground cables on both batteries. Finally when you disconnected the fuel lines from the pump, how much fuel comes out? I'm a tall person so replacing the lift pump looks like a back strainer to me - working from the top. I haven't installed a fuel pressure gauge as yet but I did buy the Briar Hopper test gauge. Thanks.

The install is quit straight forward. I am also very tall and I didn't have any problems at all. I did install from the top (I can't imagine how any one does it from the bottom as the service manual indicates). I did take out the two bolts holding the fuel filter assembly so that I could swing it out of the way.

Not too much fuel came out but you might want to throw some rags down underneath so that you don't stain your driveway. Also, I am right-handed and I ended up taking someone elses advice from the TDR to actually kneel on the valve cover to get at certain areas (it sounds crazy but it worked great). You are probably wise to disconnect the battery, but I did not since there is no power going to the lift pump with the ignition off.

Thanks David for the response. Would you care to disclose what type and size wrenches that you used to replace the lift pump. I assume the wrenches would be flare nut but you could probably use crowsfoot as well. Actually I have some flare nut crowsfoot. Is it really necessary to loosen the fuel filter cannister? Thanks again.

Thanks zman and emarsh. I guess that I must be suffering from dementia or something because after I posted my reply for dresslered, I remembered reading emarsh's post and a couple of others on changing out the lift pump - but it was too late to cancel my reply.
