Lift Pump???? Need Advise, Please.

CTD 2001, 3500, AT, 27000 miles. At the time it died last night I was pulling a 38' 5th W. Called a hook and paid the daily rate for New Years night. This morning it started up and ran good enough to back the trailer into the yard. Then later it ran static for 15 min. before dieing when I put it in gear. I read some of the threads and tried a few of the diagnostics provided by those great members.

1. The fuel filter canster is full. 2. Cracked #1 & #4 injector tubes and bumped the starter a couple of times. No fuel seepage. 3. Held the pedal to the floor and cranked for 10 sec. and got a little fuel around the injector port. 4. Did the three clicks of the ignition and got: "P-PCU" "P-DONE" "P-ECU" "P-DONE".

A joy of a Salvaged vehicle is the local dealer informed me that the truck has had all warranty canceled.

I need to make a delivery as soon as I aply a fix... ... ... Thanks!

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge?

Can you hear your lift pump running?

When my vp44 loses prime I usually have to bleed 1, 3, 4, and sometimes 5.

Lift Pump

I can hear the familiar hum of the lift pump. In fact the thing hums a few seconds after I turn off the ignition. Another thing I just thought of. When I got it to run there was white smoke. A lot of white smoke then it dissipates until I ran the rpm's up to 1200.

Any ideas?

there are two valves pre and post fuel filter.

open each individually to see if you have fuel sprewing out when the lift pump cycles. If you have fuel does then it sounds like your injection pump is bad.

Has the lift pump gone out in the past. Cummins tech support informed me that a bad lift over a period of time can cause your injection to go south.
