Spoke with dealer's service writer said to bring it in, I asked if it was covered under 100k/5 year warranty had no idea. I asked if he knew if there was critera for replacement/if covered under warranty, also no idea. Asked to speak with someone that did - after hearing I had 5# @ idle, 0# @ WOT and mentioning that the shop manual stated under 10# is not good, the Shop Manager agreed the lift pump needed replacing, was a warranty job, but suggests towing in so as not to damage injection pump. Asked if they covered the tow, "no". I asked if they have pumps in stock said he would have to see truck to be sure, he reminded me I shouldn't drive it and should have it towed in. I offered VIN# which should give everything he would need, he said no that he needed the CPL from engine plate, I offered him the CPL he said he still must have truck before he could order any parts and more than likely it would have to come directly from Chrysler. I said it was my daily driver and couldn't afford down time. He recommended their rental department. I said I didn't feel I should have to pay for a rental inorder to have a warranty repair performed. He said he that he couldn't help me then. I made sure of his name and thanked him for his help and said good by.

He tried to make it sound as if there were many possible pumps for this truck? of course which one he couldn't determine until he tore mine apart, stranding me at their dealership, renting one of their vehicles, then leaving my truck there until they get the magical pump and finally feel like installing it. Can you believe this Jerk? Same butt head that told me he never heard of the cold weather idle flash, after I showed him the TSB he commented something about the wonderful internet and commented the flash was useless.

Questions:

Should I call their parts dept. tomorrow to see if the pump is in stock? There isn't but one pump which can be determined by VIN etc. - correct?

Then I could ask for the daytime Shop Manager's opinion on the situation. If he takes the same stance as the guy I spoke with tonight should I explain that I know the job is a 2 hour max job and the part is about $150 and ask if it's their policy to make customers feel they are trying to make up the cost of warranty work (which they get paid for from DC anyway) in towing and rental? Only reason's I ever went there was for the hitch & hood latch warranty's, they are pretty close and the service dept has M - F 24 hours w/Deisel Tech's on staff round the clock! It's unfortunate they ruin a beautifiul thing 24/5 with a cocky night Service Manager. Sorry for the long post venting a bit!?

Does anyone know if I "have" to take it to a dealer or can Cummins honor and do it as a warranty?

Joe, there is only one part number for the lift pump. 5080885AA. That is the only one from DC that should go on your truck. As far as a Cummins shop doing warranty work they cannot unless directed by a DC dealer and the invoice would have to be sent in by a dealer as a sublet repair to have DC pay it. Good luck, sounds like you need some. You must be dealing with a bunch of yahoos.

Mopar1 - I kinda thought it would have to go thru the dealer - also figured the pump was the 5080885AA I've been seeing posted all over. And yes this one particullar fellow is a real charmer. I'll see what the daytime fellow is like in the morning. If it becomes too difficult to deal with them I can try another one or do it myself. Would rather use the $150 for fuel though. Thanks for replying.

They're not sure

First off. I bought the extended warrenty and a rental car is free if, 1, the vehical is an over night job and 2, if it a serious enough problem, and 3, its comes down to the dealer as to how to handle it. I had 2 times I got a renter for free. I also called the daimler customer service. to log the problem and the conplaint. That was cool, but the bottom line is, as the dealerships are independent ly owned your at their mercy, so daimler says. You would have to get a work order from the dealer to have a cummins shop do work so you wouldnt get charged. It did help in my case to say I called the daimler line and that I knew what I was talking about. The dealer finally came around. Carson City Dodge is still a great place to get work done. As all places I have found , youhave to know whats what and present it that way, or who knows what you get.

Joe are there other dealers in a decent distance of you. This one seems to suck. As for the pump I had the pump Mopar listed installed this morning under warranty. They had it in stock and to 45 min. to do the pump and a new steering stablizer. The pump tested at 19 psi.

I have had terrible dealers and great ones. We had a dealer give us his company car while one of the families volvos was in the shop and that same dealership sends people to the house to pick up and delivery vehicles for service. But of course this is not a dodge dealer

What about AAA?

Ted

I just got mine replaced today under warranty with 59k. No questions asked and I was on my way. I would go to another dealer.

New lift pump installed last night

First a correction: I found out yesterday morning that originally I was not speaking with the Shop Manager as told, I was speaking with the Shop Forman.

To the point - new pump installed - cost to me $. 00.

Very appoligetic Shop Manager - very sorry Forman - he represented himself, the dealership and DC incorrectly - according to myself and the Shop Manager;) Was on my way in 2. 5 hours with an appoligy for taking so long as the Tech. had some problems with a line. Will check pressures this weekend.

Is this number in my warranty information? Why did this help to call them first? Did they say that it was covered by the warranty (5 year 100K or emissions 7 year 70K mile) and that your Lift pump PSI's were to low so your pump should be replaced free under warranty? Did they give you a number to refer the dealer too? Please explain? Thanks

Yes - As Pit Bull asked - anyone have the number for DC customer complaint line?

As for Pit Bull's question - I told the service coordinator the truck was sluggish, and after checking the pre and post filter psi's I found pressures lower than what shop manual called for I. E. 10psi. He wrote my comment verbatim on the service ticket and after all was completed wrote inspected lift pump found it shorting internally and replaced under warranty. :D

I have heard a lot about the pumps and as I posted in another thread mine was replaced under warranty on Monday.

this caught my eye...

wrote inspected lift pump found it shorting internally and replaced under warranty.

I got to look at my old pump and judging by my experience the failures are in the motor not in the pump portion.

The pump looked to be steel geared rotary pump. the inside of the pump looked new. I don't think any thing this side of steel shavings would have much effect on the pump itself. The fact that cycling the key seemed to 'wake up' my pump lends itself to an electrical failure in the pump drive motor.

FWIW,

Mark
