Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Lift pump out of range

Local Dodge dealership hooked up the Scan tool for free today. Didn't even hesitate. I stood there and read the output and it said...



1. Crankshaft Position Sensor... . and the tech told me it could also be the wiring to it in case a new sensor doesn't work.



2. Transfer Pump out of Range... . guess its time for a new one at 75000 or so miles.



All of this and it starts effortlessly and runs fine... . but I just got it so maybe I dont know what fine is yet.



He said the two probably are not related although he thought the bad crank sensor may cause the code for the lift pump... without researching he just wasn't sure.



He immediately refered me to Schied 15 minutes away and said they handle all of their Dodge Cummins work under warranty. So I guess its time to call them.

Wish most Dodge dealers did that type of thing.

Called Scheid and told them the situation. All they wanted was a little paperwork from the Dodge Dealership showing the request. No problem. Scheduled for this Monday.



Getting my local dealer to fix my 2500 was easy and actually a learning experience. They practically handed me the Scan Tool. All the tech said was... "Looks like something is wrong. Take it to Scheid and they will fix it under warranty. " They even offered me some pizza as the service dept was having a little birthday party for one of the mechanics.



But, I do feel sorry for everyone who has awful troubles with dealerships. I've been there and done that too.

Transfer pump out of range code (P2320) only deals with the intergrity of the electrical circuit and has nothing to do with the pump output. If the truck is running/starting OK then test pressure with a gauge to determine pump performance, if concerned.



On both codes the number of "start cycles since set" needed to be looked at. You also didn't mention if the truck is having drivability problems for sure or if the engine light has been coming on. If either of these codes have high number of drive/start cycles before reoccuring (along with it running OK) then I don't know how concerned I'd get. Codes can be accidently set by someone doing other diagnostics, or unplugging something while the key is on, etc.



I tried to be brief and not too technical at the same time.

I just found your other post on tach drop off and the engine light. Sounds like a possible crank sensor or harness issue. I couldn't find any info on set criteria for the lift pump code, but I would tend to think the crank sensor issue (seen as RPM flucuations and dropping to zero) is causing a bogus lift pump electrical circuit code.

No real driveability issues that I can tell. But I just got it too. I drive a 3500 12V that my work owns all the time. It seems to at least run as good as that one. The check engine light comes on and stays on all the time. Tried unhooking the batteries overnight... no luck. And my tach only works about half the time at random. Thats the reason I had Scan Tool take a look.



As far as running goes, it starts easy, sounds good except for a ever so slight but persistent "miss" when idleing. And sometimes when I turn on the key to on, but do not start, the lift pump (I am assuming) runs for about 10 seconds... but it does not do this every time I do that.



I figured if they will replace the lift pump at 75000 for free, why not. And I am assuming Schied will scan the engine too and make determination as to what the problem is. I'll let them tell me what they think. Hopefully, I can get all this worked out... I wanna drive this thing without fear... and soon.

I hope your right, cause a bad lift pump for who knows how long could have damaged the injector pump. I wanna drive, not fix.
