Flywheel tooth count?

This question isn't for a Dodge engine, but it's configured like a 1st gen so I thought I would ask it here. I've been having issues with my cummins intermittently loosing power for a few seconds periodically during steady state operation. I figured it was a lift pump so I put a gauge on it tonight and I'm only getting a couple PSI at idle and just shy of 20 PSI at 2200 rpm no load. This engine is configured with a VE-44 pump and a piston style lift pump and has brand new filters. I assume the pressures I'm getting are not adequate.

So, I've researched and figured out that I have the 3936320 lift pump. Does anyone know what the current Carter part number is (or even a napa or carquest number)? I've looked around and it seems like the 4601hp is no longer a good number.

Thanks!

Eric:

A couple of PSI at idle? Ouch.

20psi at 2200rpm with a piston pump sounds about 15psi short.

1st Gen diaphragm pump info:

Airtex p/n = 1407

Carter p/n = M73060

$57. 99 and $78. 79 respectively from our friends at RockAuto.com

2nd Gen piston pump info:

Airtex p/n = 73104

Carter p/n = M73104

$129. 79 and $180. 99 (ouch!) respectively from our friends at RockAuto.com

What should a 1st Gen diaphragm pump be putting out for pressure at slow/fast idle?

We'll get that White 2-135 out in the fields and running like a champ before you know it. :)

I'd be curious to know what kind of boost that thing is running as well. The fact that the IP doesn't have an AFC on it is a little odd... but 99% of my experience is with OTR engines... not Ag/industrial.

Little update...

I didn't realize there was a low pressure version of the piston pump. I thought the 1st Gen guys were using the high pressure piston pump and then regulating it down a bit. Come to find out - you folks are using a Case part number out of an Ag application... which is low pressure - no regulation needed.

Since this engine in the White 2-135 conversion project was out of a Case tractor - it's all making sense now.

Now we just need to find an aftermarket part number for the Case low-pressure piston pump to avoid paying dealer prices. :)

Matt

Cummins part number for the low pressure pump is 3936320, as stated by ERego. Drop the 3 for a J and you have the Case number. I think they are about as high as the high pressure pump.

In my experience, the Airtex isnt worth the ink the box is printed with; but others have had good luck with them.

1stGen diaphragm pump puts out 5-7psi at idle, and will pull down to 3-5 under stock load. Add injectors and fuel pump tuning, and you can get down to the injector pump pulling vacuum from the lift pump. Book calls for minimum of 5spi at idle, and 3psi at rated load.

FWIW- my month old Airtex puts out 5psi at cruise, and will pull down to 2psi under full throttle (28psi boost, 1100EGT). Adequate, but far from good.

Part #help!

I am doing the piston lift pump thing to one of my dodges (1992). . i went to a cummins parts place and asked for the 3936320 pump but I got a 4988751. He said it was the updated # but there is a curious old # on the box that is 3937404... I asked the parts guy about it but got the standard" I punched in your # band it came out this #"

Does anyone here know if I got the low pressure one?. I don't want to blow out my VE... .

Thanks,

Chuck

I guess diesel is oil... ... :-laf all you can do is laugh at the incompetance.

The parts counter person is probably someone they "stole" from McD's :-laf

Eric and I went and picked up the proper low pressure piston pump at a Case Ag dealer in Cross Plains, WI (Kalscheur Implement) last week.

If you have them look up a combine with a B5. 9/VE you might have better luck. I'll see if I can grab the part numbers from him.

He installed the new pump and the pressure is WAY better and he reports that the White 2-135/6BTA repower project runs like a top.

I'd probably get my hand slapped if I turned up the wick on that one. :-laf

Eric's into HP diesels but with nearly $5/gallon fuel... every little bit we can save helps keep the farm's costs down.

Matt

Speaking of part #s... Anyone here know the # for the fuel line that goes from the Fuel filter output to the VE pump on the first gen?

Thanks,

Chuck

Help!!!

OK,

I finally got around to installing the piston lift pump. . All my part numbers match but here's no way it'll clear my pushrod cover at the case vent.

You who have "sucssesfully" done the swap could you post or send a picture?

Also how thick is your spacer? mine is 3/16"...

Thanks for any info... ... .

Chuck

Update

OK , I found out that the pump was pushing against the cover but, it's were there is a plastic/rubber type sound deadening material there . . I was able to clearence the pump there by cutting away at the deadening material with a box cutter. started her up and she's running fine. . tomorrow is the pressure guage install before I drive . . I want to make sure that pump isn't pushing too hard on the VE seals... .
