I was replacing my fuel filter a couple of days ago, and when I put the new one on, I went to prime it using the primer lever on the lift pump. Well, the primer didn't work, naturally. It was right in line with everything else that has been happening, I didn't really give it a second thought. No spare diesel around, so I just started it, ran it out to the air pocket, and on the third try, she roared to life without even cracking an injector. This story is two fold: These are great great engines, and 2: Is my lift pump on its way out? Or is it ok that my primer doesn't work?

More than likely the lobe that runs the fuel pump was at the top of its push. No primer then. When that happens bump the motor a bit and see if the prime function starts working again. If not could be a bad transfer pump.

If the lift pump is on the high lobe of the com shaft then the primer arm will do nothing. you will have to bump the engine over a fiew digrees. Than the primer arm should work normal.
