had my lift pump puke out on my 2004. 5. no other issues til now. $750 at the dealer... had to install the new one in the tank... when it came back had a bunch of crap connected to the battery. and the "lamp out" light was on. fuse #19 was blown and i re-installed and blew again... any insight is appreciated... thanks. scott.

Question, everyone seems to be going to the (in the tank lift pump) . Is it better? Napa carries the old style pumps for about $230 and you can replace it on the side of the road in about 30 min. with simple hand tools. . I am reading here that the in the tank pumps still die so why go through that bother. Just a question

fuse #19 is some kind of trailer lamp.

the fact i didn't call napa was that it was sunday afternoon and i needed it fixed asap. and the dealer has oem parts. i tend to use oem parts for my truck. jmo...

Got two of the supposed aftermarket pumps in my hand (available from Geno's and blue ridge diesel, and others) they are the OEM carter pumps that was originally installed.

Box says Alliant power PN:AP4089602

Comes with everything you need

Yeah, My intank pump went on me after it was refitted from the fuel filter location, and now it is even more of a pain because you have got to drop the tank to fix it either way. I wouldn't put a intank pump in. It is easier to work on an external pump if it goes bad. You can find some good lift pump, filter combo's that you can put on yourself. And that's coming from a backyard mechanic. lol

At the risk of making you nervous, it sounds to me like the goobers at the dealership have no idea what happens to the electrons after they leave the battery. I think (someone correct me) the in-tank retrofit requires a connection at the battery for the new pump rather than letting the ECM power the pump.

Fuse 19 runs to the trailer tow connector, although the manual doesn't show clearly which pin. The wire is red with a violet stripe and is located in cavity 3 of the pigtail where it connects to the trailer connector harness. I'm attaching a circuit diagram from the service manual.

But you have to wonder - why would the trailer connector circuit suddenly not work right when it's totally unrelated to the lift pump repair? That would make me nervous. Does anyone know whether the harness for the trailer connector runs down along the driver-side of the frame, near the fuel tank?

how much were they? and why the redesign to relocate to the tank? any thoughts?

As JHardwick points out, the in-tank pumps are generally more reliable than the old filter-mount pumps. Very few in-tank failures posted around here.

The lift pump at the filter has to pull the fuel up to the injectors. The intank pump pushes it. A submersible pump is more efficient (read that more reliable and longer lasting) than an above ground pump.
