I'm not sure what's going on here with these junk lift pumps, but it looks like it's been going on for a long time. Is DC so stupid that they can't find a fix or a better product to remedy this problem? It seems this is a major problem and I'm wondering now if I bought the right truck. If DC doesn't care enough th fix this, why would I think they'ld care about anything else? 35K for a vehicle that has quite a few problems, as reported here, and some of those unfixable, I find to be unacceptable.

Further, I now see why all you folks are BOMBING your trucks. Mine won't pull any of my trailers near as good as my powerstroke. I didn't feel it had near the power when I bought it, but thought I'd wait and see what happened with a few miles on the clock. Now with 5000 miles it still won't pull my stuff up grades like the PS. I don't really mind the power difference, cuz I don't pull any real big loads and an Edge and some pipes seem to be all I'll need. But the lift pump thing is really starting to **** me off!

Relax, and don't worry....

Remember that this is a site with over 9,000 members and some are BOUND to have some problems. Guess where you are gonna hear about it?

It's easy to have an impression that every single truck manufactured has brake-pull, or lift pumps going south reading here on the TDR. Truth is that there are a LOT of members here, and percentage wise, those with problems are a very low percentile.

It's the same with any common interest website with many members.

Given the number of active members here, and the volume of trucks, I think it's pretty impressive that out of 9000 members, probaby fewer than 15 have a lift pump issue. (just number guessing here). You work out the percentage.

As for you pulling ability. 5000 miles is NOT enough.

Mine finally broke in at 27,000 miles. MPG shot up too.

Once they break in ,they pull HARD. Just have a look next trip the number of first gener's are out on the road pulling with the PSD's!!!

The engines just don't seem to "go" right out of the box.

Even Cummins mentions that if you don't tow very much, break in period can be in excess of 20,000 miles. Right from the Cummins website.

Maybe the lift pump is the most COMMON failure in the small percentage, but does not mean that every truck has this problem.

These website can give that kind of impression though.

Seriously, you would feel different if everyone posted everything that WORKED properly, right? It doesn't work that way.

It's kind of like the news... the only news that makes TV is BAD news!!!

No-one hardly reports good news.

I've had no problems with mine whatsoever, and enjoy it more and more each day.

Cheers,

Shawn

Thanks for the reply, and I do see what you are saying, but some of these folks are on their 3rd and 4th lift pumps. I would think if they had a problem with one and replaced it, what would be the chances of them getting another bad one? Pretty slim I would assume, but 3 or 4 would be more like the odds of winning the lottery. There's something wrong here.

Knock on wood.....

12,500 pretty rough miles on mine so far and no problems. I don't tow but haul a constant weight. I got tired of waiting ( Can you say Instant Gratification) for the break in so Gauges, EZ and 4" exhaust... . Viola instant break in.

Better milage and power when I need it. The good news is that it will only get better.

I too was worried when I first got the truck. Seemed all the hype was just that. I took it to several dealers and Cummins. They all said it's fine, Just be patient:( :(

Well right now patience is waiting to put in DTT stuff so I can get some mild injectors.

Some complain that you have to toss some money at these trucks to make em right. The way I see it is that I spent nearly $40k (With utility bed) for a work truck that should last me a lot of years. Whats another $4k at that point. The numbers work due to the longevity of these trucks.

Sorry for rambling but I really am sarting to love this truck:D :D

I have a Westach pre- and post-filter combo fuel pressure gauge on the 2002. I'm holding 16+ PSI fuel pressure at the VP44 at idle and never drop below 12 PSI at WOT towing the 5th wheel. We only have 930 miles on the truck, but these fuel pressures look very encouraging! :D If the lift pump will just live, maybe they have this thing under control in the 2002's.

I would be patient and wait for the break in. Your engine will run much better. I wouldn't sweat the small stuff like the lift pump issue. Just install a fuel pressure gauge and monitor it. If you go check out the dorf (ferd, phord) site you'll see lots of problems with captivation and crackling (unless they finally figured it out) and other issues.

I don't have any problems out pulling the powerjokes. There is nothing more fun than to come up to a hill and blow by the powerjokes.

If you check out past lift pump threads, you will see that a lot of guys were experimenting with after-market pumps and a lot of the failures were with them.
