I went to the local Cummins dealer to buy a new lift pump. My truck is starting to hesitate under a hard pull and will cut out when accelerating hard. The tech at Cummins told me that the lift pump only operated when you turn the key on to prime the vp44 on start up. He said that the vp44 sucked the fuel form the tank. If this is true, then I certainly do not need the new lift pump. I have about 130K on the truck. Any input is appreciated!!!

bbbbbbbbuuuuuuuuuuuuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz .... wrong answer

he is WRONG , the VP44 will suck from the filter housing , but not as far back as the tank . fact that you are stumbling tells me your lift pump is almost dead , or your filter is clogged . get a pressure gauge and check it out .

 That's news to me and probably a few thousand others here. If that's the case, they should never go bad, because they would never get used at full duty cycle.

That's the very same answer many of us get from most of the Dodge dealers we try taking our trucks to, the mechanics and/or service writers are stuck in a 12 valve mentality, they do not understand how the new 24 valve system works, and will not listen to what you try to tell them. My service writer looked at my fuel pressure gauge, and even rode with me, watched it drop to 0psi, then insisted if the truck was still running, there was nothing wrong with it. I was ready to take a swing at the stupid S. O. B. To this date, I have lost TWO lift pumps, in over 50,000 miles of driving.

It's much easier to buy one and change it yourself, than take the risk they'll screw something ELSE up, trying to find the problem.

We drive, own, and work on these trucks, therefore, we are stupid and know nothing about them.

Thanks for the reply. I suspected the he was severly mistaken judging the the previous posts. I purchased a new pump anyway hope to install this weekend.
