lift pump question

I don't have guages yet, but i am worried about all this talk about lift pump failure



is there anyway to know this if you don't have guages?

the reason i ask is...



the other day i was driving with a fairly heavy load, and my truck started pouring out black smoke and shuttering and then it died... it did this three times... . all three times it started back up... I got out and opened the fuel filter drain and ran some fuel through it... and the truck started and i haven't had problems since... .

i was just wondering if this was a lift pump problem



i Changed the fuel filter and it didn't seem dirty at all

is your high idler the adjustable type--maybe it got turned on or ???



I was going to suggest open the drain and see, but you've done that, so what's next---get guages for sure!!!



Black smoke = unburned fuel.....
