OK, Don't flame me on this one, but, Why a Lift Pump design in the first place?
What is the reason for having a lift pump drawing relatively high viscosity fuel from the tank instead of a fuel cooled inline direct drive 30 PSI pump in the tank? I understand that the fuel is more subject to contamination and wax formation, but there does not need to be anything but a self scrubbing filter in the tank mounted pump, no screen.
While most gas vehicles now use a returnless system where the pressure regulator is on the pump and excess fuel is returned immediately to the tank, a full route return system through a 5-10 PSI drop filter like on our CTD's would eliminate that, and eliminate the lift pump issue.
Fuel could be warmed by circulation, which it already is, and a second return flow scavenged filter could be installed inline with the source and return lines. The scavenged filter could expunge water and heavy contaminants automatically and continuously.
I know the Cummins/Dodge engineers know more than me but I just don't get it... ... I need answers, is there a better mouse trap?
