Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Surging Idle?

Judging from recent inquiries and my own personal problems, I think it would be a good idea if somebody (not me) put together a lift pump relocaton kit. I have done some reading in the forums and have decided that I would like too move my lift pump down to the fuel tank and install 1/2" fuel lines. A previous price quote of $250 was given, but if someone could put a kit together and get Geno's to market it (like they've done in the past), perhaps we could all get a better setup for a reasonable price. What do you think?

Practical Solutions Diesel makes a harness for the power portion of the move... .

The rest is a matter of choice... I know guys who did not replace any lines and I know guys like myself that did the whole thing in braided stainless steel hose with fancy connectors... .

If you got a quote of $250 and it included new lines and all the electrical connections then go for it.

Lift Pump

I have put together several lift pump kits. If you would like me to set you up e-mail me. -- email address removed -- . Thanks, Sam

Advanced Diesel Technology has two kits they sell using the PE4200 pump. I think one kit comes with the breaded nylon hoses and the other is with SS lines. The last price I saw was $560. I think the SS lines were $100 more. The kit also replaces most of the banjo fittings. To me, so far this pump looks like one of the better ones. The pressure is right and the original pump is bypassed. I saw the one Rip has on his truck, looks good.

Holley Kit

Kit - note the lack of pump. Priced @ $120 w/Big Banjos see next post - can't do multiple pictures?

Holley Kit Banjos

I think it's worthy of a call on Monday . . . to see if a pump is included and if not how much and if pump is designed for diesel? and, and , and

WildCat Diesel has 1 or 2 kits left. They discontinued selling them and will probably be very very reasonable on selling the remaining stock. In fact, buying the large banjo fittings will probably cost you more than the black kit which includes 3 of them. Dont forget their improved banjo bolts.

But Wildcat will tell you they have AN style custom fittings being produced currently that have the proper M12x1. 5 thread for our filters canisters and VP's that will use a racing type braided hose of size -6 or -8. They should be about ready to market these kits... which is why they stopped marketing the black kit. I spoke with them about 2 weeks ago on this same issue. I'm pretty sure you wont get a Holley pump with the kit.

Great folks up there... they will help you.

Thanks for giving the guys the heads up, Neil.

The Holley Black Changeover kit has been discontinued in favor of using custom 12mm to -8AN fittings, with high quality 90 degree sweeps and stainless braided line.

One of the issues that prompted this switch are some recent problems that we ran into while using the Holley Blacks on the Dodge trucks. We found that many Blacks were "dead out of the box" and that idle pressure after install was around the 10 PSI range. Talks with Holley netted us zero results, and all we got was the company line "This pump isn't rated for use in diesel fuel".

After cracking open a couple Blacks, we discovered a faulty internal bypass that needed cleaning up. Some rough edges that needed to be filed down, and the entire assembly cleaned with brake cleaner. After performing the service, pressure came up to 16 PSI at idle, and stayed up to around 12-13 at WOT. But we were uncomfortable with Holley's response to the situation, and quit recommending the use of the Holley pump.

While we were sorting these issues out, a few customers used the Holley Black kits in tandem with their stock lift pumps, and discovered that pressures were very good up to the 375-400 HP level, and the lift pumps were holding up well once the back pressure had been eliminated from the outlet side of the Carter lift pump. However, the Holley kits were a bear to install on stock lift pumps, so we wanted to something easier. Further digging led us to a couple companies that were building the 12mm to -8 adapters, including a fitting with a 1/8" tap for a fuel pressure gauge, and we found some nice sweeps with swivels that would lock to stainless line. The nice part of the new kits is the complete elimination of banjos from the injector pump supply side (except for the inlet of the factory lift pump. This banjo, when replaced with a high flow bolt, doesn't appear to hurt anything).

We're now up to the 40K mark on a couple test trucks (each at approx 375HP) using larger lines, and pressures have remained strong. 15 PSI at idle, 10 - 12 PSI WOT. We think the new lines, which are easier to hook up, and will cost approximately the same while not requiring the high flow bolts, should be a decent rigging.

Following the lead of some other respected diesel performance vendors, we also contacted Product Engineering about their 4200 series pumps. Following several lengthy conversations with the creator of the pump, it was discovered that PE feels their pumps will work great under the hood of the truck, as long as the inlet of the pump is not higher than 1. 5 ft above the bottom of the tank. By the middle of next week, we should have a custom bracket built that will mount the PE pump to the frame, under the hood and out of the elements. The -8 line kit can then be used with the PE pump, and it appears as though the 400 HP+ crowd will benefit from the use of this heavy pump.

As a side note, we're getting some custom fittings machined for the 03's as well that will eliminate the stock lift pump and replace it with a PE4100. We're hoping that this will eliminate the problems found at about the 560HP level where the low pressure side of the injector pump is emptying out.

Sounds great Wildcat Diesel!! I knew you could explain it better than I could. Sounds like you folks have been doing some serious thinking about the whole setup and the various needs of different trucks. Great to see.

Reliable..

I see all these expensive kits and my kits are very simple. I have been running these kits on my truck and many other with out having problems. There is one truck I installed this kit and he dyno #'s were 447HP and 14psi on the fuel gauge. My e-mail is nas. car3@gte,net . Thanks, Sam.

I got my kit from Haisley Machine. Everything included. I could have gone to the hardware store but my schedule prohibits shopping around. They use the Carter pump.
