my friends 04. 5 went to dealer yesterday for not wanting to stay running. Dealer called today and said lift pump is not covered under warenty is this BS or not what should he do? and they want$700 to fix

Thank's

It's covered by the 5/100,000 warranty unless he modified his truck then the tabs on him. Have him tell the dealer to call DC customer service, the zone rep, and star if they don't want to fix it or he will call them himself.

I beleave the warranty is transferable once. He might have to pay a small transfer fee. He could call customer service to find out, the number is in the owners manual. I think in the warranty part of the owners manual it states the warrranty is transferable once.

If it were me and had to pay for a new lift pump I would install an after market one. The are cheaper and maybe more reliable.

04. 5 is on the Motor. The in-tank unit was installed beginning in '05. I know, my on-the-motor unit failed at 34,000. The new one is in the tank.

on 04. 5 is it in tank or on motor?

The lift pump is covered under warranty. The one the dealer installs will be in the tank. It won't last very long pumping unstrained fuel.

I'd install a Fass or AirDog with a 3 micron filter and have piece of mind.

update my friend called me and told me that it was the FP module and it was not covered. Does this sound correct he also called DC and they also said it was not covered. that sunds pretty crappy to me.

I believe the intank pump is ONLY covered 3/36! The one bolted to the engine is under the Cummin engine warranty. The INTANK is a D. C. item and NOT part of the fuel system warranty. How about that.

He is refering to the 04. 5 truck which would have the lift pump on the engine and would be covered under the 5/100,000 warranty. It would be replaced with an in-tank type lift pump.

The 05 trucks have a 3/36,000 and 5/100,000 and 7/100,000 warrranty. It all works according to how you use it up first.

If DC tried to claim the lift pump is not a part of the engine warranty I would get a lawyer to ask them why doesn't the engine run if it's not a part of the engine warranty. I beleave you could also claim it under the emmissions warranty.

The engine and warranty associated with it is not a cummins warranty. DC buys the engines from cummins and puts their own warranty on it. You can not take your truck to cummins to have warranty work done on it without prior consent from DC. If you did take it to cummins without concent from DC you could get your warranty voided by DC.

Covered or not tell your buddy NOT to pay 700 bucks for that intank pump that sucks just as bad as the filter mounted pump. I just did a Walbro kit from Glacierdieselperformance. I am not very handy with a wrench and I did it myself in about 4hrs, priced less than half of that 700 you stated. And get this... it is supposed to be quite reliable, no lift pump from DC is noted for reliability. That 700 bucks seems like a complete ripoff to me, I imagine most of it is labor.

Your right about crappy lift pumps on the 1998. 5-2004. 5 trucks but do search on 2005 in-tank lift pumps and see how many you can find that have failed. Your search results will give you the answer as to how well they are made.

I had the FP fail and take with it the injection pump on my 04 3500 dually... . at about 85,000 miles... they covered the lift pump, and injection pump no problem... but it took them 6 or 8 days to sort it out..... 5 months later the new life pump failed again... . they wouldn't cover it even though they had just done it 5 months before..... we had an extra lift pump on the truck... . and limped it home..... we replaced the lift pump with the pump in the tank.....

We tried to use our frame mounted pump alone..... and it would not pump fuel through the lift pump mounted in the tank..... we thought that it would pull past the 2 one way valves in the stock pump... it won't... ... so we have the extra pump sitting on the frame rail... .

Hope this helps... BTW... if the truck has been tampered with... . any kind of enhancements for power... . your on your own... .
