Well just crawled under my truck and seen that the bottom of the engine and trans is all wet with fuel, liike like it is comming from the lift pump area. Are there rebuild kits for these ar is it an exchange. where is the best place to get one. should i go ahaed and upgrade since it is already leaking.

give me your thoughts

Adam

Adam, I think that Cummins has upgraded the lift pump 2 or 3 times already and a Cummins dealer is probably the best place to get the latest version. I would make sure and ask if it's the newest version when you purchase it and not some older one they happen to have in stock.

Adam,

Check your fuel lines, last year my '96' split a line while in the middle of nowhere, Wy. Lost a lot of fuel before we were able to get to a garage and have bad section cut out. Replaced both lines when we got back. I may be on the wrong track, but that was my experience.

There is a maintenance kit for the cover that screws off. I thought I had the P/N but I can't find it. It was covered in a back issue of TDR. If I remember right it's a gasket set and maybe the filter screen. If it's the gasket that's leaking the kit may fix it.

I've had the ring type gaskets break seal when changing out the fuel filter and, not expecting them to be a problem, looked all over for the leak. You might want to keep them in mind too. As far as lift pumps go, I mounted a S-W elec. pump back on the tank mounting bracket (electrics like to push far better than they like to pull) and have had no problems. Just flip the switch to momentary on and no more pushing the priming lever 'til you think your thumb is gonna fall off. Hope this helps,

Check your fuel return line the one that runs under intake manifold at rear of engine on drivers side. Its a real bear to reach but you can do it easy enough . Just feel them with your fingers for cracks and dry rotting if its wet youve found the problem.

I just changed all rubber fuel lines on my 96 Flat Bed due to dry rotting. :)

Found it. It was the return line under the head. Dry rotted.

Removed the starter to replace and made it alot easer.

thanks for all the tips

Adam

I knew someone would verify that removing the starter was the way to go when changing out the return and supply lines. I didn't take my starter off when I did mine and it was a real bear. Next time if there is a next time the starter comes off !!!
