I have a 2001. 5 3500 and from what I hear I will lose the lift pump eventually. What are the symptoms? Is it a slow process? Or will I definatly know when it goes out? Thanks.

Best way to tell is.......

keep an eye on your fuel pressure. I see you do not have a fuel press. gauge in your truck. Do yourself a big favor and install one!

Or at least monitor it from time to time. I believe the majority of folks here on the board will agree that it is the best and cheapest insurance policy you can invest in to save yourself a lot of aggravation later.

lift pump

just replaced mine today. this the third one in 220500km. i have westach gages so i can keep an eye on the pressures. the one i removed was not completely shot. the pressures are dropping slowly. shows 12@idle 10@70mph and 8 @wot , will keep as a spare. definately need gages with these trucks. kinda funny they can send men to the moon but cant make a pump that will last for more than a few thousand miles.

kaptn,

Some have said they experienced a loss of power under load, others a rough idle, and several posted that they had no symptoms at all and only caught the failing pump when someone checked the fuel pressures.

I watched mine failing slowly over a couple of months until the WOT readings were below 6psi and i replaced it.

Your fuel pressure gauge is your bestest buddy. ;)
