Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) grid heater not working

My truck has 25,000 miles on it. When new it had 14psi at idle and I could not drag it down below 7. 5psi WOT. Now I am at 12psi idle and 6psi WOT. My question is should I just change the pump out now. Does the pump just one day die, or does it just keep getting worse.

Thanks Les

My opinion is...

After reading all that I can, I'd replace it now. Dont Delay! It might quit tomorrow completely, or get worse over a period of time. Either is possible, both are bad. Dont chance it. Dont count on Dodge to make your truck last forever. If the dealer wont do it, I'd just go buy one if you can.

The Dealer probably will not touch it if at idle pressure is 10 psi or better. Total cost at cummins for parts, new pump and 4 sealing washers is around $150. 00. Working at a steady pace it will take you about 30 mins. to 1 Hour (casual pace). Good luck.

This may sound like extra work...

But I took out my starter to do this. I found I could gain easier access to some things from underneath. It only takes about 10 min to take it out so I figured what the heck. I'm sure some would say its just more work, but I've had mine out about 5 times now and consider the starter an easy job. All you need is a 8mm, 10mm, and a 15mm wrench. I can only get my socket on one of the base mount bolts so I dont even bother with it. I got a much better look at the banjo bolts down there. Watch the ole fuel in the eye thing though.

But then again between the lift pump, CKP sensor, CPU harness, and just general lookin around, my head is seeing more time in that area than the starter is... hehe.

Change your fuel filter and see if that helps. Even with the numbers your truck is showing you don't have a problem. Mine drove fine with a dead pump. If it gets down to "0" then have the dealer replace it. Your covered for 5 years and 100K miles for your model year. Why waste the money?? If it ain't broke don't fix it :)
