I have seen the new and improved Lift Pump for the 2003 -04 Cummins and sad to say it does not look like a winner. The Tech showed me a cylinderical pump . It does not look to be a heavy duty pump. Hope all of you are not having issues yet !

One would think that the manuf. would have resolved this problem by now.

Given the failure rate of the new design over the old, I would have to say it's much better. I've only read of 2 failures on this forum (and one of those I'm not sure about). It may not flow enough to keep up with big H. P. mods, but thats not DC's problem. I believe the problem has been successfully remedied.

My brother in laws lift pump might have gone out on his 03. They towed it to the shop Saturday and I did not see it setting at his house this morning(4:30) on my way to work and did not get a chance to talk to him yesterday. His was running fine and he stopped at his house and got in his work truck and a couple of hours later he got back in his and it would not start. He said he did not think he was out of fuel cause his low fuel light had not been on to long and he only had 300+ on the mileage. He said he cracked the cap on the fuel filter to see if any fuel was coming out of there(probably sucked in a bunch of air doing that)and got not fuel. He put 5 gals in a can and poured it in the tank. But when you turn the key on you can here his lift pump run and stop over and over. I have never heard one cycle like this to fill the fuel filter. He poured some more diesel in the tank but his gage does not move. It has about 12 gals in tank and gage does not move. Anyway its at the dealer now so they will figure it out.

Face it, LP problems on 2nd generation trucks have been around for about 6 years - so LOTS of history and 10's of thousands of trucks - the 3rd generation stuff is still cutting it's teeth - LOTSA stuff out there that may well start surfacing as more and more hit the road... ;)

The dealer here has stated that he has done 9 since the 3rd gen came out... less then the 2nd gens in comparison... so far. Thats one dealer.

I lost my lift pump a week ago. The mechanic told me the replacement pump is supposed to be an upgrade. I hope it is better as I had to wait for one to be shipped to the dealer. I wanted to possibly get a spare pump but the partsman said DC will not let them keep one in stock and that he could not get me one. The only way DC will send them a pump is if they can prove the pump is not working. This sounds like a load of crap to me. I sent DC an email expressing my concerns and all I got was the usual politically correct reply. The mechanic said they had 8 lift pumps fail in one week in November with the first cold snap. My pump made it through a lot of cold weather and failed on a nice day. Hopefully the problem will get worked out. I am thinking about trying to get a after market unit that is more reliable. DC does not know that some of use these trucks in remote areas and that their warehouses are not around the corner.

Gary, 3rd gen trucks have been out for long enough to get an indication. While the new lift pump may not be perfect, I believe it is a definite improvement on the 2nd gen 24V setup. More importantly, if the lift pump on both trucks fail, there is a good chance on a 2nd gen that the VP-44 is either dead or suffered damage whereas I'm not hearing that with the CP-3. As you say, the more time passes, the more we'll know.

(edit)

You 3rd genny guys - don't take this as "gloating" over your LP problems - rather, I'm simply trying to point out your newer trucks ARE displaying the same high LP failure rate as did the 2nd generation stuff - exact comparison of relative numbers isn't the issue - need for sensitivity to the problem and counter measures IS!

If *I* had one of the newer trucks, you can bet yer sweet bippy I would have a pusher pump in there for assistance and backup, JUST as I do on my '02... ;) :p

The problem my brother in law had with his 03 was the ECM. They had to replace it. First one this dealership had to replace.

Well, Knock on wood, I've got 119K on my 03, and 90K of those with a Quadzilla box on, and (again knock on wood) no problems yet. I pull my fuel pressure down to 2lbs. quite often too. On my 00, I had replaced the LP twice in that many miles. I shouldn't even be telling this, cause I'm leaving Sun. on a 3K+ trip, and Murphy has not been good to me in the past.
