I believe Jimmy (JGrefenstette) has 35s on a stock height truck with a little custom fender "shaping" with a sawzall. I'd bet 2" of lift with a front end leveling kit would get you 36s comfortably.
Here's my old truck I had. It had 6" springs and 3" dropped spring hangers, so 9" total to clear 38. 5's. It cleared them with just the 6" springs, but I had to trim the fenders a little and lower the bump stops to keep them from rubbing.
How wide of a tire are you going to run, 6" is fine for a 12. 5" or narrower, I ran 38. 5x16s with 8" and they hit they crunched the fender when turning
