2001. 5 Cummins 4x4 auto. I know the ground on these trucks is being used to switch the lights off and on but what about the dim and bright switch, is the ground being used for switching from dim to bright and bright to dim or is the hot side being used to switch from dim to bright and bright to dim. I have the service manuels but cant really determine if the hot or ground is used.

I recently tapped the radio display light dimmer for a gauge installation. So yes, dashlight dimming is switched through the hot side. I always find a good chassis ground for all my accessory grounding needs - using a wire that appears to be grounded is usually a bad idea - especially under the dash! There is a reason everything in the dash is in its own plastic bucket! ;)

low beam and high beam

yellow, the beam change is done with the ground. the red/orange wire at each light is (switched) high beam ground, violet/white is (switched) low beam ground. violet on the left and violet/red on the right are the 12v+ leads, and are constant 12v+.
