I just bought a 98 QC 4x4 that is supposed to have the 215hp pump, however it appears a dealer performed the EPA authorized uprate to 230HP and remarked the data plate to CPL 1553. I haven't got the numbers off the pump but I can see a plate that says "Remanufactured by Cummins" with a part or S/N number stamped on the plate. The pump housing isn't painted either which was the obvious sign that something changed from stock.

The truck has 315K on it and runs strong but falls off after 2300 rpm. I was wanting the 215hp pump to mod for more HP, but now I don't know where to start with this unit. I don't think it is as good a base to start from as the 838 or 913 pump.

Anybody know its limitations to making HP?

If its a manual its the 215 pump. I'm guessing it drops off ar 2300 due to the gov kicking in. Try a 3k spring kit

You can tinker with (or remove) the cam plate for massive power all the way to 2900 RPM. I have no desire to change the governed max speed on mine, for fear of over speeding the engine, but with my cam plate removed, it pulls HARD all the way to the 2900 RPM governed speed. There are less drastic changes you can do to the cam plate and you can buy those expensive aftermarket cam plates.

The Cummins up-rate kit consisted of injectors, pump and wastegate actuator set for 28 psi boost. It was smoke free and had a strong bottom end. I beleive the top end was a bit lacking but was calibrated to be safe with your foot on the floor towing. Throw a gsk on it and you will gain some rpm, change the plate and you will will gain some more power.

IIRC the uprate also included recon Cummins injectors. All the upgrade items, for the most part, where 215hp parts, just recalibrated pump. I would treat it just like a 215 motor. #10 plate with 3000 GSK, injectors and a turbo (and a clutch that will handle it)

The pump is not the same as the 215... .....

This is the question. What is not the same?

The timing table for this "uprate pump" uses the same data as a 160hp pump. This does not bode well for performance... whoever threw the 913 pump out of the truck for this should be shot! It may be OK for a 94-95 upgrade but it's a downgrade on a 96-98.

I'm thinking of swaping this uprate pump and injectors to my 94 2wd which I just installed a 913 pump on Oo.
