Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Lack of Power

I have a 96 dually with an lsd in the rear. I have had the pinion seal replaced three times in the last year and a sleeve put on the yoke once. My question is this, recently the rear feels like it is grabbing when I turn a tight radius and apply power. It's the same in forward or reverse. I'm wondering if a bottle of friction modifier will solve this, or do I need a rebuild on the lsd. The dealer said they topped off the diff fluid, but I didn't lose that much lube. The leaks were weaps at the most. Also, I am thinking it's time to replace the diff lube and am wondering if a good synthetic will act the same as the modifier. Do these axles have gaskets on the rear diff cover or do they use silicone? If silicone is the way to go, what kind and color is best? What is the volume of oil needed?

Thanks,

Travis

No gasket required, just use a thin bead of RTV. If the rear end is grabbing, IT at least means your LSD is working. Mine would not even engage no matter what I did. I would say to pop the cover, giver a good eyballing to make sure everything looks good, clean everything down and put some new fluid in. I do not run synthetic, as I have aDetroit locker and i do not tow much, so heat is not a concern.

As far as your pinion leaks, I had to replace my yoke as the factory one was soft. I also leaned the hard way that it is best to go to dodge to get the seal and yoke.

And use a quality synthetic.

My jeep has royal purple and modifier. Behaves great. romp on it you get two black lines on the pavement, grips on snow and ice.

At 60k I'm doing the same to the CTD, so if this thread is still going I'll let you know next week sometime.

I typically use the RTV black. As far as capacity, I know mine took 6. 5 quarts witht he stock cover, 8 with the Hytec cover. I have a D80.

Your lsd is telling you to change the fluid. Use a good synthetic add modifier from dealer. Last truck was 65 chevy with 455 olds and 3. 73 posi. If the fluid wasn't changed every 20k miles it would really clank even when stopping

I use 2 bottles of modifier and the clank on tight corners dosen't happen, but the lsd still works like it should.

It depends on the truck whether or not you need the modifier. . I know trucks that run the synthetic lube and dont have to use the modifier but my wife has a 2000 with the dana 70 and I have to use the Dodge modifier. The guy that we bought the truck from ran the Royal Purple 75/140 and didnt have to use the modifier. . I used Amsoil 75/140 and I had to add the Dodge stuff to make things work correctly.

My suggest is ... change the diff lube to what ever synthetic you decide to go with. . and go do the figure 8's without using the modifier. If for some reason the clutch pack still grabs... add the Dodge modifier and do the 8's again.
