I have been told many times that the "Power Lok" is the more desireable of the two limited slips Dodge has used.

Does anyone know which models and model years it was used in?

Chris, Go to (dodgeram.org) and you will find all the info. Like it's been said on here the D70 has the Powr-Loc and the D80 has the Trac-Loc. The only difference between them is the D70 has the Powr-Loc which has 3 plates and 2 disc per side with ramping on the pinions. The D80 Trac-Loc has 6 disc and 5 plates per side and no ramping on the pinions.

Does anyone have a pic of the tracloc? I thought it only had plates on one side and the powr loc had them on both sides, am I wrong?

powrloc

C-P-C-P-C-P-C-X-C-P-C-P-C-P-C

Trac loc

p-c-p-c-p-c-p-c-X.

I called national drive train because their website lists a D80 detroit locker for ALL ratios 35 spl, It's a miss print. 4. 10 and up only. Damn it.

My 98 12v had 4. 10 diffs in it originally the dana 80 had a powerlock unit (4 pinion gears and ramps) I swaped gears to 3. 54 and put in an other pwrlock unit from a 99. From all my digging around it seems the earlier D-80's 99 and older used the pwrlock unit, there might be some confusion about the name traclock/pwrlock, use discription 4 pinions or 2 pinions when shopping for one

If you go to any Dodge service manual 1996 to 2002 and read under 286 RBI axle (D80) General Info. It say the Trac-Loc contains two clutch packs and 4 pinions. You can also go to Dave Fritz's (dodgeram.org) site and it will tell you the same thing. Check any of the Differential and Gear sites and you will find that they don`t make a Powr-Loc for the D80.

Am I misinformed? Is the trac-loc a superior unit? Sorry, I'm not well versed in this subject.

Thanks for all the info guys.

a freind with an '01 and i compared and the 70 had the powerlock with c-p-c-p-c-p-c the 80 trac lock had a staggered (looser) pattern c-p-c-pp-c-p i think, anyhow the 80 was designed to "slip" more ... do a search there is a GREAT thread it was a very detailed and inexpensive "fix-it" that worked well for my friends '01 dana 80 ...

i also know that the '01 manual states that the 70 had a powerlock and the 80 had a trac loc

Feel free to chime in any time Josh

Please listen... . DETROIT LOCKER take my experience, not because it is cool, but if you bomb your truck like I have, You will blow the rear out of it, I know, I know 1 out of 10,000 but IF your planning on rebuilding a rear anyway safe yourself the agg. in the future. I understand this may not fully answer your question, But I find myself happier when one of you guys tell me my future, take this for what it is worth concerned advice.

99 Ram 3500 QC Blah... Blah... Blah... 98,000 Mi. Blah...

I had a detroit in a 77 chevy crewcab and loved it, When I can get to it I am planing on putting one in my 99 dodge 2500. I put that old truck threw hell and never had a problem with it.

I think the detroit is my kinda unit... I've heard it's the only one that can really hold up to what a diesel can put out. I'm not fond of ARBs because of the airline issue.

Thanks everyone.
