I know this has been discussed long ago , however, I have heard of two people having their liimited slip differentials go out after some after market upgrades... In one case the clutch plates in the differential were pulverized and the owner didn't even know it except to check it out when he would do burn outs and only one wheel would spin. My question to all members who have limited slip differentials is: Has any one recently experencied any problems so far, if so what was the result, approx. how many miles, and did you do any upgrades for power recently???? My concern is I have limited slip and was hoping these were isolated situations and not a weak link in the drive train. . Thks, Heber:confused:

I've got close to 70K on my limited slip and it still works like new. I do have a Mag Hytec cover and use Amsoil series 2000 75-140. My engine is enhanced, 240HP at the rear wheels on a dyno. Not as radical as some on this site but still a lot more than stock. Make sure you have enough oil in the differential, the only weakness is the left hand carrier bearing tends to run dry because of the crown on most roads when your oil is not full to the top. Good idea to fill it up with the nose pointing downhill or add a Mag Hytec which allows you to fill to a high enough level to keep the bearings well oiled. I did fry my original carrier bearings about 1000 miles after the warranty expired due to following the manual that said fill to about 1/2 inch below the fill hole.

66,000

ls rear diff sucks got gear oil with no additive and it still dont work

so here comes a DETROIT or an ARB

B... ... .....

Heber, I have a little over 80K on my LSD and it works perfectly. I also ran the factory fill in the diff for over 50K miles. I think you either get a good one or you get a bad one.

limited slip problems

my truck has 175000km. no problems until i changed the gear oil and added an after market modifier . lots of chatter had to drain oil flush housing . added quaker sythentic and dc addative. no more problems.

Thanks guys!!!

Let's hear some more???? Its sounding as if it ain't broke leave it alone! And make sure you have proper oil level! Any thoughts on change out times, recommended oils, factory vs. aftermarket? I need to get this behind me.

Had 3 LS replaced because my truck wouldn't move if one set of rear tires was on ice (flat ground). Finaly replaced complete housing. This was all in less than 10k mi. But at least now it kinda works. I guess I got used to the locker in my old truck..... Blue

I knackered mine by driving too long on the smaller spare :(

What a dumbass... ... ...

So if anyone just happens to have one laying around.....

Bugman.

the dana 80 is a trac lock.

the dana 70 is a power lock.

thats why guys with 70s say no problem.

dana 80 guys have nothing but problems.

the 80 can be fixed for no out of pocket money.

e mail me if you want to know how.

My rig only has 2k on it but so far the rear diff is as tight as I would want it to be, I usually run detroit lockers in all my rigs, But this is an exception. This truck will be used for much more than hard core off road, such as daily use & towing. I hate to admitt it, but I put a detroit in the back of my 28ft class a m/h & in the dry I wish I made a different choice. ---Proflow

ok on the dana 80 trac-lock you remove he axles, take the carrier out to a bench. nexted take the bolts that hold the two carrier together. take the cluches out note the order thay are stacked. what you want to do is stack them alternating the ones with 4 tabs with the ones with splines. now assemble the carrier back together. put the carrier in the housing using a soft dead blow hammer and that thing will work killer.

Steve, 117K on mine and works great. i have had AmsOil in it since 40K. Joe D wrote an article about filling the Dana 80s, the stock fill plug is too low. I jacked up one side as high as a floor jack would and filled it like that. Get a hold of JoeD he'll be able to fix you up.

When mine goes south I'll have a detroit locker.
