I just saw a post regarding stock EGTs being high while towing. The poster added some mods which increased boost from 17. 5 to the mid 30's. What is the limit of the stock turbo before you have durability issues? I know on TDI's stock is about 15psi and the limit is around 18-19psi... so I was surprised to see such a huge jump in boost.

Vaughn, how much is it?

I'm not really worried myself, just curious. I highly doubt I'm pushing any egt limits on the flat ground here in FL towing a 1000lb ATV trailer:-laf Even if I am going 85:D

Lightman he hasn't firmed prices I don't think, give him a call, I was hearing in the $300s so probably under $400 but don't quote me on it. Downside is you gotta send yours in but hopefully as more guys upgrade turbos Piers will have some cores (and the price may be higher then). It all depends too if this item is a "hit" and guys start going with this upgrade.

The one in the picture is a one-off he did for me and it's definitely an improvement. I was looking for an inexpensive mod that would help rein in EGTs for those with minimal (or no) power enhancements and to give a nice little kick in power. I haven't gotten it back on yet though after letting Byron try it out for a few weeks, and I'm going to Florida tomorrow for 10 days, so unfortunately I can't give any more feedback on it. When I drove it for a couple days it definitely helped midrange power even without running a box.

Vaughn,

What exactly does he do the the turbo housing? Is it a messaging deal with a die grinder or is actual machining machining involved?

Machining, JHardwick. He basically uses an HX40 compressor pinwheel and machines out the housing so it fits, and beefs up the bearing a bit too. If you look closely at the photos you can see the inlet diameter is a bit larger.

Lightman the Florida trip fell through. I was flying to Miami then to Marathon Bay in the keys for a tech seminar on surgical laser service. After two flight canellations I wasn't going to be able to make it in time so now I'm postponing until April.

Guess that means I should put the turbo on, but I can't get into my garage right now and there's still over a foot of wet mushy snow here :(

Boost code?

Vaughn, did you see any evidence of increased boost with the Piers turbo? (ooppps, you don't have gauges). Any fear of setting a boost code? We high altitude folks gotta do something about the high EGT's we suffer, especially when we hook up to 11K worth of trailer and start up somebodys mountain. Ron:{

i talked with mark at piers last week and it was 300. 00 exchange. there is a 1000. 00 core charge till they get yours back. unless you can go with out your truck running for a while. it just goes on the CC for a week or so. anyway he said it would flow great up to 400 or so rear wheel HP and spool up quicker than stock. im going for it along with an ATS ex manifold

Back to top

For the sake of us high mountain haulers, this needs to be back on top..... At 5K (min) elevation, these 3gens are going into roast even without a load and bone stock. Towed to Utah last summer, had to reeeally watch EGT! Keep this thread going. Ron

Does anybody have a clue what the compressor wheel costs?

I'm thinking of switching mine over as soon as the weather breaks!!
