370's vs Honed 370's

Where's it comin from?

I have a 98. 5 2500 4x4 ext. cab w/auto. 48K. miles, pulling a 27 ft. 5th. wheel. The 5th. wheel loaded is =/- 9600 lbs. When I first starting towing up Oregons steep grades, the t/c started to chatter. I took it into a shop here in Salem and had an ATS torque converter, an ATS valve body and an ATS torque commander installed. Last week hauling over mountains it did great- trans. temps ave. 180, boost 20-25 and egt's about 900-1000. Coming down a steep grade I had the truck out of overdrive, using the torque commander to to keep speed down. When I got to the bottom of the grade and came to a stop light, the trans. temp. went to 210 deg. and the trans. would only go in high gear unless I shifted it thru the gears. After shuting off the truck and letting it cool off for about 20 min. the temp. gage went down to 180 and the trans. shifted fine.

Any ideas what happened?

your truck went into "limp mode" do to the high transmission oil temp or orerating out of stock configuration.

Where is your transmission temp sender located? I hope it was in the return line to the cooler .

good question Bob. I had the shop install a remote filter/temp. sender that I purchased, hopefully he installed it on the return line. If not , where should he have installed it? If the temps. were to high, was it due to having the torque converter locked up by the ATS Torque Commander? I also had the shop use Amsol sinthetic trans. fluid on the changeover. The fluid when hot still had a red color and no burnt odor.
