Ya, that engine was too quiet.
I spoke to the Cummins rep and this is what he told me they did to reduce the noise.
1) extended the block skiting down and added a bottom plate to keep them from rattlin.
2) The Biggie - They got the injectors to fire off 3 slugs of fuel on every firing. First shot is about 10% of the fuel for a small pre-ignition, second is the big one with about 80% fuel and the last one is about 10% for the after burner to burn off the fuel. That got rid of just about all of the knock.
The noisiest thing on that truck was the air pump which he said is not being installed on production models. Sitting in the cab, it sounded like a low trian rumble that's about a mile away.

It probably won't take too long for the computer guys to get rid of the pre and post injections and that should bring back the mighty sound the Cummins is known for... .
So there might be life after death after all. Oo. Oo. Oo.
