Calling all diesel experts. Now don't laugh guys - here is the question.

Is it technically possible to make a 24V 1999-2002 almost as quiet as a 2003 by modifying the injection pattern. Seem to me I have read someplace that the 2003's use multiple injections and a common rail system to achieve a quieter engine. Of course they did this and lots of other stuff. Would it be possible to replace the injector pump and injectors and reduce the noise level? With all the computer stuff we have today it seems like someone should be able to program something that would work.

I know; sure it would take some engineering but look at the rewards. Thousands of Dodge truck owners buying a noise reduction kit- we are talking big bucks here gentlemen. But forget the money aspect of the question - is it technically possible?

it is possible... the VP44 is capable of Pilot injection, but the software re-write to the ECM and VP44 would be more trouble than it is worth. I also think this would only be applicable while the engine is idling.

I heard and 03 go by yesterday morning and it wasn't so quiet with a strait pipe on it. :D Sounded kinda funny though, nothing like a regular 24valve. :rolleyes:

Possible?

Diesel Freak:

Have read lots of your posts and respect the information you provide.

Are we talking 10 hrs, a 100 hrs or a 1000 hrs. ? A hundred hours at $40/hr is only $4000. 00 which wouldn't be an excessive amount for something that might be worth ten's of thousands.

Of course the second part of your comments which if I understand it [and it is quite possible that I don't LOL] is that it would only work at idle?

Quiet

DB:

Yup know what you mean. Was at our local air show and Dodge dealer started an '03' up for me. I was standing by the left front fender with the hood open and could hear him talking from inside the cab with the door open.

On my truck with the hood open you need ear plugs to prevent hearing loss LOL.

Tom, look at it this way. How long has the MAD ECM been in developement?

Programing Pilot Injection at ilde into an ECM should be a much simpler task... . but you first have to get there, and the easiest way to access the ECM is still up in the air. You could remove the OEM EEPROM and solder in your own, or you could hack the cummins software and use the Inline II adapter... . but, well you know where that can lead if you are looking to make a quick buck.

WHY????????

Why would someone want a quieter diesel? Its the diesel music coming from the engine compartment that I love. .

I looked at a 2003 diesel the other day,, It has a common rail - constant pressure delivery system to electronically operated injectors - no "timed injector pump" just a high pressure fuel delivery system. I can see that everything can be controlled much more precisely - however does open things to different issues - more computer controls - more sensors. . Yet DC can't even modify programs in their present computer for tire sizes out of the range that they equip the trucks with...

Himmmm,,, to develop a way to convert the VP44 equipped trucks to a commom rail electronically controled injection system,, with pilot injectors... . Maybe our trucks need a pentum-4 300,000GHz processor... . :D

MORE POWER ARRR-ARRR-ARRR

Lets see the question is how do I make a Harley sound like a Honda? :-laf :-laf The answer, go buy a Honda. But don't plan on riding with the Harley crowd :-{} Sorry not trying to flame anyone but I just don't understand how anyone would want to mute the music that these engines make :confused:

Quieter?

When I bark my HO off on a cold morning, all of the neighborhood soccer dad's won't even look me in the eye. :D They are envious. They just get in their little mini vans and toy SUVs and try to ignore the sound that my truck makes. It makes them realize that some guys just haven't folded in to the pressure to drive a little play vehicle.

If my Cummins was quiet it just wouldn't be the same to me:p

i will give you a reason and a dang good one "hey honey i want a new truck" i say to my wife the other day she says "hell no " i say lets at least go look" she says "maybe" i finally get her to the local stealer and the ignorant sales man cranks it up and instantlly my chances of buying a new truck just skyrocket:D she says "is this a diesel and are those four real doors" i say "yes four real doors that you can get 2 forward facing baby seats in" then she says the real clincher " well how much" i got her, now it is only a matter of time:cool: these truck have become even more user friendly go drive one and you will see what i am talking about. i have not ordered one yet but it is getting closer. :) i can not wait to hear this thing with the turbo silencer off it is going to really sing. dont worry as soon i get an 03 i am cutting the muffler off..... ssshhhhh. dont tell my wife. :-laf "honey it has always been that loud":-{}

I love the quality of sound my truck makes, and I personally don't mind the quantity either most of the time, but I know when I drive it around I'm bothering other people. It's just a fact.

I know you can't go through life without affecting others from time to time, but I like to keep my personal negative impact to a reasonable minimum.

What would be great is a "Quiet Idle" mode that would kick in when you're parked. That would solve most of my neighborhood problems.

It would also help when trying to sneak back in the house at 2:00am after a "night with the guys" without wakeing Wifey up. ;)

Not that I'd ever do such a thing. ;) ... ... ... ..... smack... ... . OUCH... ... . dang that hurts. :D ... didn't see her lookin over my shoulder. :-laf

Love This TDR

Gentlemen;

If you ever want to start a thread with tons of conflicting opinions [and a lot of great humor] start one that suggests your truck might be too loud LOL

I will admit that cruising down the highway with the Cummins a'humming is sweet music. That straight six is pure music at about 1950 rpm BUT when I start her up at 5:30 a. m. on a cold morning my neighbors start to; well you get the picture. Also I really like the looks of my 2001; I mean the 2003 is fine but I guess I am just used to my 'old' truck. I would of course like a bigger back seat but then again its big enough for my dog when we go camping. DO NOT like the fact that the new trucks are higher [or they look higher] since my 5th wheel axles are already flipped over.

Anyway; the MAD ECM is a l-o-n-g t-i-m-e in coming and for heavens sakes don't ask me why. I just drive a diesel not program them. However I am somewhat familiar with EPROMS and AMD/Intel chips, and motherboards, and stuff. But at my age I just want to travel, enjoy life and goof off. I'll leave the computer programing, soldering and serious wrench turning to the younger set.

So would I spend a $1,000 bucks for a quieter engine?

How about $2000? maybe

Whats my alternative - a 2003, a durawhatever or power something [my son has a Ford]

What we need here is a major sponsor to throw money at. Diesel Dynamics, Bosch, or maybe Cummins; someone like that; to build and/or provide guidance. Bit the bullet and pay a licensing fee. Let some $$ roll around the table and see where they stop LOL

Some year trucks are simply classic in lines - the 48-53 Chevy/GMC - the 53-56 Fords - they were so pure in line that few are customized, only restored or a few small efforts to "modernize, like flip-up front ends...

To me the 2nd generation Dodges are like that - so smooth and well proportioned that they NEVER fail to turn my head when one goes by! The 3rd generation truck aren't BAD in my opinion, they've simply lost their "slickness" and proportion, with a front end and grille that reminds ME of a pig snout... (apologies to 3rd genny owners!)

I'm one of those guys to which external appearance is of great and basic importance - and honestly, it was the SOUND of that mighty Cummins that instantly transformed me into a "Cummins diesel groupie" when I first stood on a dealer's lot, lifted the hood and fired one up back in '91...

I'd be the first to admit there are MANY trucks in this group that would put mine to shame in appearance, OR sound - but this certainly ain't bad:

#ad

I think I'll always admire the sound of a good running 1st or 2nd generation truck - just as I admire the sound of a mellow straight-piped Harley - I buy my stuff primarily because it appeals to ME, Lord knows I put up with enought offensive crap from various of my fellow travelers thru life - and if the sound of my '02 Cummins is the WORSE fault they can find with me, well, so be it!:p ;) :D

Twas the night before Christmas,, when nothing was sturring, not even a mouse... I had just snuggled down to a mid-winters nap,, when there rose such a clatter,, I knew something was the matter,, I jumped from my bed,, threw open the sash,, and what do my wondering eyes see,, it was;

JUST THE NEIGHBOR COMING HOME IN HIS 12 VALVE. . :D

Laughing My

Some TDR members are in the wrong jobs. You should seriously consider going to the comedy store and tell Dodge diesel truck jokes. You can bet I would be there having a ball LOL

"Twas the night before Christmas... " is a true classic.

One of these days I'm am going to get out my calculator and figure:

How to shut my engine off and coast into the driveway without waking anyone. Some pretty serious calculations are needed thou - I mean it's up a hill, I'll have different amounts of fuel on-board depending on how many trips I've made to the store for 12 packs, need to make a right hand turn. air density will of course change, naturally the outside air temperatures will vary - Don't want to hit the garage door you know LOL

I knew I bought the right truck when my wife did not want to ride in it. Says it is too loud, too big and too high off the ground. Ye Haw :D I might be a red neck but my Dad can Kick your Dads butt :-laf :-laf
