My son and I went looking for a 5th wheel this weekend and indoing so Had a sales man show me what certain trucks could pull. The book said that my 98 12 valve can do 14. 300lbs. My sons 24 valve 2001 can pull 10,000lbs We both have automatic and the same155 rear end I understand that in 98 that some changes were made on the calif trucksI bought mine in november of 97 I dont know of many 98 that are not 24 valve can any one tell me???

load ratings

Look in your owners manual. I think it will say load capacity. It is a chart that has truck size (2500/3500),transmission type, rear end gearing etc. It wont have tare weight. You will need to know how much you truck weighs with full fuel load and cargo (occupance) included. My GCWR is 8800 lbs. My truck weight is 7300 lbs. My max hitch weight is 1500 lbs. Do the same for the trailer. Don't listen to the salesmen. Do the math your self.

My 97 with a 5 speed bought in TX has a 20,000 GCWR. The same truck sold in CA is 16,000 because of the EGR and a lower HP engine. The 98 12 valve trucks like mine were derated to 18,000 GCWR, then upgraded back to 20,000 when the 24 valves were introduced. Gosh, could that have been a DC marketing ploy? :--)

All the weights are in my owners manual and I suspect they are in yours.

That dealer is not your friend if he tells you that you can pull 14,300 lbs with a stock automatic.

trailer towing

In my book it's under trailer towing. GVWR is 8800 lbs. GCWR is 20,000 lbs. Max trailer Wt is 13,250. TDR issue-35 pg-30 "Towing with your Dodge" should help you.
