While looking for replacement tires I can't decide between a D-load or the E-load rated tire, specifically the Cooper Discover S/T. I would like to go with the LT285/75R16 which has a D-load rating but rated for 3305lbs, the 265/75R16 is E rated @ 3415lbs. What handling characteristic's could I expect between the two with a fully loaded camper weighing approx. 3200lbs. Would it not be wise to go with the 285's??? Of course the dealer is telling me " Suuure, you'll be fine, go with the 285's".

The "D" should be fine they care almost the same load as the "E" rated 265's. The "D" rated 285's would have a little softer ride, but the 265's would do a little better in the snow because of the smaller foot print. Kinda 6 of 1 and 1/2 dozen of the other. I would go for the one that cost less.

I had D Rated tires on my 96, and if you Tow or carry heavy, I don't reccomend doing it. Even at max pressure, the tires felt and looked spongy under a load. It's the reason I am not getting 255/85's for my Dually.

There is alot of debate out on this subject, as Pit said, the difference in wieght rating (for example) between a 235/E and 255/D tire is only 42lbs. The ride however is a different story.
