I was picking up parts and noticed a 04 dually with the engine removed. A liitle worried I asked the S. M. why?Apparently his "buddy" changed his oil for him and left the filter loose. I don't know how the guy ran it with no indication something was wrong  . So this ended up being a $11,000 oil change :{ cause it fryed the engine. I guess warranty don't cover stupidity  ... Doug

It hapened to me once I rented a isuzu box truck for my service company while my truck was in the shop the rental co. sent someone to my home at night to change the oil and he forgot to put oil back in it the next morning I started driving to houston with about 4k in the truck and it was still running but sounded bad they told me to drive it in for exchange thats when we noticed no oil at all the filter was not even prelubed

That brings back memories of my 72 Chevy 4x4. . I loaned it to my brother to take on his yearly trip to Bonneville Salt Falts towing his race car and trailer. One of the guys who was working on my dads ranch was to change the oil and get the truck ready for the trip. (this was way before the days of the $15 Wal-Mart lube oil and filter). Well... . he drained out the oil, stopped and had lunch... . forgot about my truck and went on to the rest of the chores at the ranch. My brother picked up the truck later that day and took it to his house to load his car on the trailer and get ready for the 700 mile trip in the morning. I got a call later that day and he told me that my oil pressure gauge wasn't working. . Thinking a min, I replied it sure did yesterday!. I forgot to mention that this was 1974 and the truck was only 2 years old. I went to his place and said that I had the ranch change the oil. We lifted the hood and pulled the stick and saw NO OIL at all. Then looked under the truck and the filter was missing! The distance driven was about 8 miles and 6 of it was up hill. I might add that the motor never even knocked! Well, that was 30+ years ago and the truck still runs fine! We had added a filter and 5 quarts of 30w and he made the trip and when the truck was returned, it still had not burned a drop! That truck is still running great and gets about 14 mpg on the highway with almost 500k on the 350 Motor. . I wonder if my CTD could have done that?
BTW... Im planning to drive my Chevy during this Fuel screwing we are getting with hopes that within a month or so, the prices will come back to earth. Regular unleaded is still $1. 95 with Diesel over the $2. 70 mark! OUCH!!!
Sorry about the long post

He probably forgot to make sure that the rubber gasket came off with the old filter. Two gaskets between the filter base and the filter always equal one big mess. One probably blew out and left all the oil go.

I wonder if the oil pressure guage gave any indication of a miss-hap?

Happened to me on a brand new Hobda in 76. The old filter's o-ring had stayed on the bottom of the engine, The combo of two o-rings caused all of my oil to squirt on the ground in three blocks! Synthetic oil saved my engine - no damage.
