I had posted earlier about engine hesitiation and recieved input that it sounded like a bad lift pump. Where is the pump located, and what is the correct fuel pressure for 2001 engine not HO. Will you get white smoke with this problem and will it cause any damage.

The stock lift pump is located directly below the fuel filter canister, at least it was on my 2001. 5 HO, your's should be the same. I don't have my service manual handy, but anything less than 10 psi's at idle would concern me, as would any less than 3 psi's at WOT. As to your question of white smoke, did you see at while the engine stumbled, or at idle. I have some white smoke at initial start on the real cold mornings, though that clears up after several seconds. On the other hand, when my truck still had the Carter lift pump I had one real bad stumble, I had to pull over to let the engine recover and yes, I had quite a bit of white smoke at that time. Seems that most who have a lift pump that is going bad see very erratic, yet sporadic readings on their fuel pressure gauges before the pump actually dies, I didn't have a FP gauge when the first pump went, but I did with the first Mallory 4150 when it died, one week before it passed I was seeing sporadic FP readings that would bounce from 2 psi's to 12 to 6, etc. Then I returned to the truck idling one day and observed -11 psi's. Bottom line, if you are getting a stumble and white smoke and don't know what your psi's are, my guess would be the lift pump. Get a gauge on their and tell us what you are seeing, preferably at idle and WOT. Hope this helps !!!

Also, if your lift pump is dying, yes, it can damage the VP44 pump if you drive with the VP44 trying to suck fuel for long enough.

I'm getting about 14-15 psi fuel pressure at idle using a stock lift pump and Ray's banjo bolts. I have noticed that when I'm low on diesel fuel the gauge might read 13 psi at idle.

I have not been able to get the fuel pressure to go below 6 psi at WOT with DD1's.

Hope this helps. .

My gauge is going in this weekend along with the Pusher pump. I will post results here though. I am anxious to see how my trucks stock pump is doing.

My fuel press with engine off pump on is 11#, at idle is 11#, wot from 0-105 held 6# all the way up. see sig for bombs including fuel lines. My fuel press. gauge arrived yesterday and will go in this weekend. Next weekend the pusher pump will go in.

FYI fueled up at F J and did a round trip to Santa Fe @ 80 mph in cruse( 124 mi rt ) and topped off (6. 3 gal ) upon return.

Just put the fuel pressure gauge in my 01' auto and i start the truck and the gauge goes up to about 14-16psi, then a few seconds later, right down to 4psi at idle. When i step on the gas pedal even halfway, the gauge goes to zero. It shot up to about 14, then back to 3 or 4 again. My lift pump is dying, correct? I am going to the dealer monday to have the broken Clockspring replaced and the rear end leak fixed. Should i have them do the lift pump work???, or just get the pump and do it myself. Any opinions would be appreciated. I know if they fix the lift pump its free, but i dont know if i want them working on my truck. I hate dealer mechanics, they are in most cases a bunch of morons who do sloppy work, at least where i am they are. Any suggestions?

Also, i am taking my EZ out before i go (Obviously). But should i put the stock air box back in and are they going to give me a hard time about the red valve cover since it shows i took the valve cover off?
