Strange Problem with the engine

Just finished the installation of my Converter Lock-up switch, man does it make a world of difference. My truck accelerates so much faster, and feels stronger with the switch installed. If you have an auto and haven't put a switch on yet, I personally suggest it. It is the next best thing to a 5-speed.....

Be Careful With It !

These other Guys with Autos will jump in here, But I would be very careful how you use it.

Suggest that you do a search on this switch and get some pointers on when to use it and not use it. Using it for hard accelerating and low speed load pulling will lead to problems and even quicker if your transmission and tc is all stock. It is too much low speed/rpm torque for the involved clutches.

Thats exactly right. Nailing the go-pedal to the floor, and pulling at low rpms are both things that shouldn't be done when locked. I like using it as a brake, and keeping the wear and tear off my clutche as much as possible. Got the idea from Dennis and Joe.

Well I abused mine

I did the same thing, but my biggest problem was I can nail it on O/D and it would stay locked, so now 10k later if your at low RPM and mash on the loud pedal with the converter in lockup it will slip 200-400 RPM's in O/D depending on were your at, at upper levels 2k or more it's not to bad. So here is the fix, I sent the Check off today for all the DTT Parts:D :D I'll fix that stock stuff for good now!

How does that song go? "Bom bom bom, another one bites the dust" :p :p

The ONLY mystery switch I recommend is an UNlock switch. Start saving your pennies now to buy your next transmission set up, the sooner the better. If you go until the transmission completly grenades, you will have to deal with all that trash in the system. If you're running a lock up switch, the day is a comin'... ... .

:--) SLewis,

Be careful, you may have just signed the death warrant for your transmission.

I also have a lockup switch, but use it much differently. I have mine setup for three way. Lock, auto, and unlock. Under hard acceleration I unlock the converter, the lockup clutch just isn't enough to handle the huge amounts of low end torque these motors make.

The rule of thumb I've heard around here is no more than 10 pounds of boost for every 1,000 rpm. So if you're putting 20 or so pounds of boost to it at 1,500 rpm, it won't last long:{

I keep mine unlocked during hard acceleration or pulling a load at low rpms. I also try to keep from engaging it with more than 10 pounds of boost. Once it's engaged and my rpms are up, I put the power to it. :D

Someday I'd like to have a good aftermarket transmission, but it's not in the budget right now so I have to make this one last.

Sam,

There is a wiring diagram for the lockup switch on the TST web site. The wire that they say do not cut, cut it and put a switch in to connect or disconnect the wire. If it's disconnected the TCC cannot lock. There is a difference in the lockup switch diagram depending on the model year.

Does this mean the TC will unlock if its already locked?

Hey Steve, I have mine set up the same way, 3-way switch. I NEVER start out with it locked, I like the switch for three reasons. I use it as a brake, I like to decide when it is time to lock-up, usually around 65 mph. I also put it on to prevent the jolt of cutting the cruise off, I hate that. I might be worried if I was out on main street everynight spanking Powerjokes and burning tires, but I usually drive like a normal 18 year old... ... . wait, did I say 18, I meant 80, my bad. I am however new to the switch, so I haven't mastered it yet.

Sly,

Anytime you remove the ground from the lockup solenoid it WILL unlock. Locking is another matter. Applying the ground will throw the solenoid so it is in the lockup position. However, it will not lock unless the hydraulic conditions are correct. That is why a lockup indicator light may lie.

SLewis,

I never get the "jolt of cutting the cruise off" because I put my foot on the loud pedal before turning it off. That way the pedal doesn't just drop to idle so no jolt.

SLewis,

If you are using your head, the switch can be great. Your first post made it sound like you were using it for drag racing or something.

Me, dragrace... ... well, maybe in town on friday night... Just kiddin. The only time I would use it for that is if I couldn't beat a Powerjoke from red light to red light, then I would be tempted to hit the switch, but I have read the consequences, so I leave it be, especially with my R&R reconditioned Converter... go ahead and laugh it up. As soon as it goes, I will give Bill K a call. I can't afford one right now, so I'll leave the switch in the middle for the most part. I am glad I read up on the do's and don'ts, but I like having the option there.
