1st please read my signature so you know my HP and Torque, 2nd i plan to go till i get to 1200 lbs of torque. The power trax locker i have is JUNK i think i have killed it pretty bad. I am looking to replace it with something that i can drive on the street. I do NOT want to weld or run a spool. What lockers or posi units would yall choose with the 1200 ft-lbs of torque and still be able to pull heavy loads, drag race and daily driver without giving too many problems. Money is not the problem but reliability is a must!!!

the ctd I owned before this one was a 02 3500 6spd HO dually. it was dynod at 454hp 1020 tq. the rear was a bone stock trac loc 3. 73 with a off brand aluminum cover, it never spun one side or the other in soft stuff and on the blacktop,it always left long black quotation marks, so I guess dana corp new how to build em tough. your friendly local dodge (now RAM) dealer can hook you up, pun intended, but bring a wheelbarrow full of money, they are verry proud of the labor to install them.

how much would you think it would cost? i am going to install it, i have someone that knows how to set these things up thats going to teach me!

I might be able to find a wrecked truck i can take one out if and rebuild also. .

IF and thats a big if i am not mistaking the trucks that had the 6 speed were a dana 80. mine is a 70 and i am not really looking to change the entire rearend out.

well this past friday i pulled out the power trax locker and found 6 of the 8 springs that press on the cross shaft broken... i fell lucky that non of them made it through my gears or anything eles. they stayed put in their little holes. Lucky me!!!!!! as of right now i have the open rearend in and boy does that suck. i am going to get the detroit locker and run it on my stock gears for now unless someoen says differently.

well the detroit locker will be here tuesday and going in on friday. if anyone has any sugestions to make the install go easy please let me know. i dont think this is a big job at all.

Detroits are good, but not very street friendly... If you don't like it look at the Detroit True Track, best LSD available and will be much more street friendly and winter friendly than the Detroit locker...

mine seems to be working pretty good. i had a power trax locker for 6 yrs before i started doing the HP mods to my truck, it did not take much to break it. so i moved up or a detroit. the detroit seems to operate smoother then the power trax. i dont have much problem driving on the street. i try to cost into turns or only have lite throttle so that way it wont lock. but let me tell you when its locked it a lot of fun!!!!. honestly i dont even want to have the ability to do a one wheel peel.

if someone asked me i would say detroit or the true track. i have never driven a true track but if eaton made it i bet its pretty good!!!

ARB alternative to Detroit Locker

ARB is a great (but pricier) alternative to Detroit Lockers with capability to put a selectable locker in front and rear (Dana) axles, along with side benefits of on-board air. I don't know if AAM axle kits are avail, but am sure that with some fabrication this could work also. I have been running them for 100K mi, and use them all the time, with Torque in the ball-park you describe.

i put the detroit in and so far i love it. when i had to step back the the open diff after i broke my power trax locker i found out there is no point for me to ever have it unloced.

yea but what are you towing with it? i have a 30ft gooseneck that had about 20k on it when i was spinning wheels off a stop light. i think thats when the damage happened, i installed it there is really not any way to mess that up. you would about have to be brain dead to do that... . lol

this is what i tow. 34' goose with a living qtr 4 horse trailer.

I also drag the truck.

Well I guess there is something different about the lock rite and the power trax. When I told them I broke 6 of the 8 springs they Richmond gear told me I could put new ones it but it will keep breaking them that I needed something stronger. They only thing they had that was stronger was a spool and I don’t want one of them.

Nice looking truck!!!!

Which LSD????

OK, I have searched the threads, and really have nothing concrete.

First here is a satellite picture of where we live... check out the curves to the right of our place... There are a whole lot more around here. However, one wheel spins when going around the curve (you cannot see the 12 % grade that is also there.

So, having a 'locker' might not be so nice. Sometimes I drive the truck empty...

So having done a few searches, I found out that the Powertrax is now made by Richmond Gear, which from what I have read is a good thing.

Question: Why is the Powertrax from Summit different from the Powertrax from tellico4x4.com

Next is the Detroit True-Trac... Bolt-In? Somehow, I have never changed carrier Bearings without the fun and games of shimming, and setting up the other stuff. Anyone done this? It seems that although more expensive, the Detroit TT is the best option.

Anyone installed one of these? Pros / cons? Thanks.

It appears the thread on this topic are a bit old, it would be nice to have and update... was there anything in TDR Magazine in the past regarding this?

The install on the power trax is super easy, jsut pull the side and spider gears and replace with the locker, no shims. I dont think the power trax is quite as strong as the detroit. I have a detroit locker and love it. it is a little more to install that. if you go that way get and extra set of bearing and have the middle machined out a few thous so you can slide them on and off the carrier with ease. after you figure out your shim combo for the locker heat the other set of bearing in your oven or something to like 500°F then put them on and install the new unit. thats how i did mine and have like 60k on it with no problems. I did notice that eaton quit making the true trac for our trucks for some reason... . I dont know if its cause it was weak or they just didnt sell that many. I have been looking for one. I was going to install it and have it set up for my gears also. The detroit is a little rough on tires but thats to be expected when you have one wheel or the other spinning every time you turn. Thats about the only reason i was looking for a true trac
