I tried putting this over in the 2'nd gen forum, but nobaody seemed to know, so I'll try here.

I'm trying to figure out which lockers I can put in which axle. I have done a lot of research about the actual lockers themselves and I am leaning towards a detroit front and rear. Now, the application part is wear my mind turns to mush. I understand that I have a dana 60 up front, and a dana 80 in the back with 3. 54 gears, which I want to keep. However, apparently detroit doesn't make a locker for our d80, but I can modify one from the hd dana 70. So, is this the 1979-1985 Dana 70HD with a 1. 5" diameter axle shaft and 35 splines? And, since I want the 3. 54 gears, I will want the 4. 10 and down locker, which is part number 225SL58B (or is that supposed to be the L58A, C, or D? But all of that is only if I have a one piece case (which of course I have no clue). If I have a two piece case, am I supposed to use the 225S-18 as they recommend in the footnote? Heck, we haven;t even gotten to the front axle yet.

Front Axle:

This one seems potentially more straight foward, if the axle splines are correct. It looks like I would use the locker for the 1975-2002 Dana 60, 60HD, or 60M (all the same part#) which is a 1. 31" axle diameter with 30 splines. For the 4. 10 and down (because I want to retain the 3. 54 gearing), I need to use the detroit 225SL19B.

Now, I'm not sure whether parts of this is right, all of it is right, or none of it is right. That's where I need the help. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get my hands on a manual yet, so all of what I have gathered about has been from previous posts (and of course Geno's) and the detroit locker webpage applications section, www.tractech.com

Thanks so much to whoever can help. This has been done before, but I can't find published info on it.

Many thanks,

Stephan

You might try pm ing Sled Puller he has had the detroit locker in the rear of his 80 but it has to be modified to fit. I have been looking at Ox lockers and ARB and there I think it says that the front axles are 32 spline but I don't know this for sure.

I am not much help I don;t think

Could you run a spool in the front? The axles aren't locked until you put it in 4wd anyway, what would it hurt to spool it? then you wouldn't have to worry about the LSD failing. I'm sure there's some reason not to.

I wouldn't want to spool the front. The detroit locker (not LSD) allows differentiation between the wheels/axle halves when not under power, so this means that it can still be street driven without problems. I think a spool would lock my left hand axle into always turning at the drive-train rate (with 4wd engaged), thus making corners in the snow next to impossible. I do like te thought of the simplicity of a spool, good thought - thanks.

wow I think spooling a front axle on anything that ever has to turn would be a bad idea. Even on a strictly off road rig I wouldn't spool, I've been in to many places where turning has been crucial. Perhaps on a rock crawling competition truck. Stick with the detroits, though I don't see a need for locking the front. Do you really get that hard and heavy with your truck to demand it?

I was amazed at what locking my rear did for traction, so much I decided against locking my front because I couldn't find anything I couldn't negotiate. This was in my landcruiser though, a big heavy truck would be a different story. Don't see many of them where I go, they can't fit!

Isn't detroit working on a locker for the D80? I thought I read that somewhere.

Front Dana 60 is 35 spline 1. 5", not 30 spline 1. 31" which according to trachtech would be P# 225SL-29B. Since they don't have the D60 front for a '95 2500 series, used 3500, and a 3. 54 ratio.

As for the Dana 80 I found this on nationaldrivetrain

DETROIT LOCKER DANA 80 - 37 SPL ALL RATIOS

DETROIT LOCKER DANA 80 - 37 SPL ALL RATIOS

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info Tbeckman. RMan, much of my desire for a front locker is based on the high weight of the front end. Especially when getting in some slick mud, the front just sinks (we get a LOT of rain here in BC, wish we didn't but we do), with lockers I should be able to crawl through the mud. I just heard back from Jeff Phillips of Eaton Automotive. I asked him about future plans for an e-locker in the dana 60 and he said this, "

Stephan:

Yes! Please convey to your friends at the Turbo Diesel Register that the

Dana 60 ELocker will be available late spring.

Regards, "

So that is another option for anyone following this thread. I'm just a little leary of getting into a place that requires both lockers, accidently ripping off e-locker wires on brush, and then not having the front locker for the way back out.

Is genos axle info incorrect?

"Axle Shafts for dana 60

30 Spline, 1. 31" diameter (inner) 1. 34" (outer) (a)

Axle spline pitch 1. 5"

Yes muddy conditions are a different animal. In that case front lockers are definitely a plus. I'm with you on the elocker, I'll always swear by detroit... simple , effective, and built. Everyone says ARB's are the bomb... they're pretty stout, but i've seen a couple explode. I've also seen a detroit explode, but the guy had some serious power going to it, I think it was a 383 with nitrous... loud BANG. good luck!

Mistake on my part

Ok, so the "Dana 60" in the truck will be 30 spline with 1. 31" shafts, ~shudder~ and the Dana 80 hybrid out back will be 35 spline. So don't pay attention to what I posted before.

I need to stop looking into these trucks past the Cummins, other parts are starting to depress me.

good idea T, when you see where they cut corners it is really depressing. I would go so far to say this "D60" isn't a REAL D60. I have it, but I'm glad I don't use it like I use my REAL D60 for. The weight and power of this truck would surely destory it!

My blazer has a real Dana 60 was upgraded with Dana 70 stub shafts, and hubs. Nothing like 35 spline 1. 5" all the way through the front end.

If I used the Dodge the way I use the blazer, I would want rockwells under there.
