In this months issue of 4 Wheel Drive, on page 80 there is a article on a complete kit to convert your dana 60 that's under the Dodge Ram over to locking hubs. It appears the kit is complete with all NEW half shafts, spiders, hubs, spacers, seals and locking hubs. Your old rotors are used with the new bolts supplied. Looks like a great kit and I believe they said you could even upgrade to larger (sized) half shafts.
Sorry I don't have more info on who makes this.

What is (are) the advantage(s) of manual locking hubs?

radixr,

Manual hubs allow you to fully disconnect your front axles from your front differential which allows for less wear and tear on your front end components and could also help a little on fuel mileage as less things are being turned while going down the road.
With our trucks and the vaccum disconnect on the front axles, when out of four wheel drive the short axle shaft on the drivers side is still turning when going down the road which in turn is also spinning the differential gears causing excess and undue wear on these items.
I had read the article in 4 Wheel and Off Road and the kit looks good but I am afraid to see the price #ad
.

Hope this explains what you wanted,
Paul

I have the magazine in my hand now, on page 76 of Petersen's 4Wheel&Off Road (october issue). The kit is produced by Dynatrac and is offered in three stages- stage 1 uses the original 30-spline inner axles and stage 3 uses 35-spline inner and outer axles. I looked at their add in the magazine, but they don't list a web address. Looks like a well built kit, hopefully reasonably priced. #ad

The Web site is http://www.dynatrac.com

I just got off the phone with Dynatrac. The gentleman that I spoke with told me that this system has been out for some time but had not been advertised, so there may be units in the field that have been tested.

There are indeed three stages:

Stage 1- Requires no diff work and uses the stock shafts. The two shafts are mated with a "coupler" to replace the disconnect device.

Stage 2 - The inner shaft is replaced with a 1. 5" 35 spline shaft (as in Dana 70). This requires diff work like changing side gears.

Stage 3 - Includes Stage 2 plus a 35 spline outer shaft.

Prices run roughly between $1600 - 3200 depending on the stage.

Hope that helps.

Bob
