Made another STEEL workbench

What kind of loctite do you use? I picked up the rear drop in for the international today and looked for some loctite. I was in a REAL truck parts house, they had no less the 10 different kinds of loctite!!!! You guys that are real mechanics surely dont have a need for the entire array of loctite products. Is there a one fits all or do you need to be that specific on what one a guy needs

Blue is for things that you want to be able to take apart at some later date. Red is for things that you don't want to ever come apart. Green is for securing smooth bore things on a shaft. That's just to name a few... Some blends are for fine thread others are for course thread... . Then they offer blends that are for pipe fittings. Just read the label for more info.....

ED sums it up just above... . but I use red for about everything... I don't seem to have a problem taking it apart and if so a little heat does the trick.

I would like to get the kind that is in a glue stick... but none of the chain parts stores carries them... . I always look for it, have not seen it... they always have the liquid in the tube

Well first mistake I made was to take the wife with me to pick up the parts. Then to let her get out of the car. So to take time and do some reading ? WELL IM SURE YOUVE BEEN THERE. But they did have a bunch of different kinds Thanks for the help.

Thanks

Fastenal, IBS, Grainger, etc... I bought some at the NLV Fastenal store last May while I was down there for work.

One problem I have is that unlike you Pro guys I dont use it everyday and it ends up a dry mess in my tool box. Was wondering about that stick is it a better idea for the sometime user?

Most parts houses around here have it in a little foil packet for occasional users. Kinda like a Capri sun for a bolt. It seems like it does go stale after some time.

I use Red for a lot of things and also have no problem removing if so 400 degrees will loosen it up. It never seems to dry out for me.

and for our Baja bug we use super weather stripping for the outside of the bolt for vibration and holding so far we have very little in the way of a bolt backing off. the only time was on the cv joint we installed that is full of cv grease and it did not get all the grease off. ED

I know what ya mean I have gone to more of a connoisseur of beer, gone are the days of just drinking to get BLASTED. But nothing cuts the dust out of your throat better than an ice cold beer at the end of the day THAT'S JMO :D

As Tom T. Hall's classic "I like Beer" is playing in the backround with "Red Solo Cup" cued up next and we gather at the campfire telling tales and popping a cold one preferably a full flavored micro brew, but not one of those snobby ones, just a worth the time to brew and enjoy brews, I'm partial to IPA's but I digress as usual.

BIGNASTY,

I have had one nearly real bad Loctite type experience and it was at work on a VW Diesel Beetle clutch installation for a training video. On the drivers side they hang the trans on a mount and the mount is attached to the body. It had 3 10mm (IIRC) bolts and NONE of them felt good to the wrench, oh oh. More patientce, more loosen, then tighten repeat trying to break it OOOOOOPPPPSSS free, that was not the desired result, I broke 2 of the 3 bolts clean off in the trans case, horrors. How to fix? This was a factory install, never been touched. Found a video on Loctite I think showing APPLY HEAT, see how easy is comes out! These were broken with just a bolt width sticking out, went to out maintenance shop, got OX ACT rig and small tip to CAREFULLY heat backside of exposed bolt and then MIG welded a new nut on the broken stem, apply wrench immediately, and the darn thing BACKED RIGHT OUT! All was well, buy new VW bolts, precoated, replaced and all's well. No idea why they did it and found that it was a common occourance.

So I try to be careful and use the remove with hand tools grade in many cases and learned a lesson.

I havent used it but loctite makes their product in a tape version kind of like teflon tape. I think it would last a long time in a drawer like that. I keep meaning to get some when I go to the parts house but always for get it.
