Anyone remember dodgerep?

Just got back from the Vet's office. Took my 12 year old Border Collie in for the last time. He woke up this morning and couldn't walk. I knew his back legs and hips were going bad-----but why now--why this soon. He just laid there with a blank stare, and I guess I did too. We just laid there on the floor together for a couple of hours. Damn it's going to be a long day. I just got home and I have already called for him to come to me once?????? I guess I'm not as tough as I thought.

I'm sorry to hear it. I'd had a 11 year old lab die suddenly 5 years ago. I still call for her, and look for her. No joke. It is good to remember them because they teach us soo much about life.

Remember the good time you had with him. Sit down and start writing a list of the commands he knew and his favorite things.

I stopped at 86!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear of your loss.
That last trip to the vet is so tough.
You did the rite thing.
It was time and you knew it.
It is better than dragging it out and letting the poor critter suffer.
I had to do it a few years back with a 11 yr old sheppard.

Barking...

I heard my old dog barking for two days after he went down. Had to break down and head for the pound, we now have a large stripped lap dog!

Share the love, respect your dogs memory by giving another dog a home. . :D

Jay - I can't even imagine what you are going through. I dread when that day cones for my Boyz. They were in Daycare Saturday and I kept looking for them.

I am very sorry for your loss. Remember the good times and the funny time. Take heed at the lessons that he taught you. They give so much and thay ask for so little.

Kills us every time..........

Jay - check out these 2 threads... . we're with you man... we've been there and cried till there aren't any tears left... ... a person hasn't really lived untill they have had their heart stolen by a dog :), and then broken into a million pieces when they are taken... ...

Everybody is different - and even though you can never replace your loss, you need another to fill that void... ...

Sorry to hear of your loss... Border collies are truly neat dogs. We have a 12 yr old Chocolate Lab and knowing that she might not be around much longer we rescued a little black and tan Doberman female. Now we have one dog that lays around all day and one that is into EVERYTHING!

Motorhead - What a beautiful big girl that Chocolate is. I have two labs, bothmale, a black and a chocolate. My big chocolate is my favorite.

CF - If my boyz are in daycare, I keep turniing around to see what they are up to. I understand what you are saying.

Thanks for your comments and experiences. I was thinking today, just how do we get so attached to these animals. I think I figured it out--they are always happy to see you, they are always in a good mood, they never tell you to clean up after yourself, they don't tell you to stop working on your truck or quit spending so much time on the computer. They don't tell you how to spend your money and they are happy with just a pat on the head and a scratch behind the ear. I think I'm going to miss that dog more than I'd miss my-------ah never mind

Thanks again everyone

Jay

Jay,

Your pet(s) are thieves, nothing less. They come in the door and the first thing they do is steal your heart. They will never give that back. All they want is your most prescious possession, your time and attention. In return, they will pledge their life, which they will willingly give if you ever need it.

They watch over you, they will protect you if need be. You are right, they will give you a wag of the tail a lick on the face, whatever you need. They are always glad to see you because you are their life. They have no truck, television or computer, just you.

They ARE your best friend.

Well well said......

A person has never lived until their heart has been stolen by a dog..... and I really do pity those who don't understand that..... I find people like that pretty shallow, superficial and selfish... ... this is a great poem that was written by an Orvis Employee... .

And BTW - this is about the best Dog Stuff you can buy - their beds are unbeatable... ... .

and I'd sure love to give that little Doberman some cuddling... ...

Dogs in our Lives!

"We aren't house proud. If we were, we wouldn't abide the scratches on the door frame, the holes in the screen, the darkened shine of worn spots on the chair. We would wince at the mottled carpet and fret at the hair clinging to our clothes.

"We don't. If anything, we lovers of dogs, are a tolerant lot, finding greater value in the unabashed affection of our friends than in immaculate sofas. Shoes can be replaced, but heroic retrievers are timeless.

"Without dogs, our houses are cold receptacles for things. Dogs make a fire warmer with their curled presence. They wake us, greet us, protect us, and ultimately carve a place in our hearts and our history. On reflection, our lives are often referenced in parts defined by the all-too-short lives of our dogs. Eulogy To A Dog

Eulogy To A Dog

"The best friend man has in the world may turn against him and become his worst enemy. His son, or his daughter, that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and good name may become traitors to their faith. The money a man has he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our head.

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground when the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only to be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince.

When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wing, and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

If fortune drives his master forth, an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege that that of accompanying him against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when that last scene comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there, by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful, and true, even in death. "

So Help Me,God.

Something to think about

A man and his dog were walking along a road.

The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him

that he was dead.

He remembered dying and that his dog had been dead for years.

He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of

the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken

by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.

When he was standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch

that looked like mother of pearl and the street that led to the gate

looked like pure gold.

He and the dog walked toward the gate and as they got closer, they

saw a man at a desk to one side. When they were close enough,

he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the traveller asked.

"Of course, sir. Come right in, I'll have some ice water sent right up. "

The man gestured and the gate began to open.

"Can my friend," gesturing toward the dog, "come in too?" the traveller asked.

"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets. "

The man thought for a moment, and then, turning back towards the road,

continued the way they had been going.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, they came to

a dirt road which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed.

There was no fence. As they approached the gate, he saw a man inside,

leaning against a tree and reading a book.

"Excuse me!" he called to the reader. Do you have any water?".

"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there". The man pointed to a place that

couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in. "

"How about my friend here?". The traveller said, gesturing to the dog.

"There should be a bowl by the pump" said the man.

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an

old fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.

The traveller filled the bowl and took a long drink, then gave some to the dog.

When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man

who was standing by the tree waiting for them.

"What do you call this place?" the traveller asked.

"This is heaven," was the answer. "

"Well, that's confusing," the traveller said. "The man down the

road said that was heaven, too. "

"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and the pearly gates?

Nope, that's hell. "

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"

"Nope, I can see how you might think so, but we're just happy

that they screen out the folks who'll leave their best friends behind. "
