I pick up my new truck next Wednesday in Idaho. I'm looking at a 1400 mile drive back to San Diego (2 days). Should I be concerned about how much I vary the rpms on the trip? ... or just drive the thing? I'll post mpgs when I get back. Glad to see fuel prices dropping rapidly in southern cal ($2. 11 today). :)

The only thing that needs breaking in is your differential. I would go easy for the first 20 miles or so, and take a break for lunch... here's the new gear "rules" I follow:

"After driving the first 15 to 20 miles it is best to stop and let the differential cool before proceeding. Keep the vehicle at speeds below 60 mph for the first 100 miles. I also recommend putting at least 500 miles on the new gear set before heavy use or towing. During the first 45 miles of towing it helps to go about 15 miles at a time before stopping to let the differential cool for 15 minutes before continuing. "

for the rest, go here

New truck

Wardog,

Congrats on the new truck. I thought CA had some stupid law that you had to buy new cars in state (or ajacent) or they had to have 7500 miles on them to bring them in?

Oppps

Wardog,

Also, make sure you check the fluid levels before you leave. Make them check them all as you stand there and watch.

California Compliant

Here's the DMV info re: buying out of state for CA.

California residents are prohibited from importing, purchasing, or leasing a new vehicle from another state, unless the vehicle was manufactured for sale in California and the Environmental Protection Agency label certifies the vehicle has California smog equipment. California considers a new vehicle to be any vehicle with less than 7,500 miles on the odometer at the time it is purchased or aquired.

These new trucks are CA compliant re: smog crap.

I'll be paying CA sales tax when I get it here. Dave Smith's was the best price and the trip will allow me to bond with my truck:)

Thanks for the tip on the differential.

Bought mine from Dave Smith also and drove it back to Downey CA (LA County). I did some visiting while up there and had about 500 miles by the time I left for home and just drove at the speed limits. Before leaving the dealer, check the engine info plate and be sure that under emissions it says CARB not FED. When I went to DMV they came out and checked it. No CARB no registration. Also you must have a certified weight ticket from a California weighmaster (they will not accept the shipping weight) . I didn't know this and had to make another trip to the DMV office. After all was certified I walked out with my Cal plates. Had to pay $3500. 00 in use tax and fees and my insurance went up $247. 00 for the rest of the year over the cost of my 98 1500.

Hey I should make a bussines out of buying these trucks in Kellog and driving them the magical 7500 miles in Montana then sell them to you poor guys in California. Im only half kidding!

If you could do that without having to fork out all the registration fees (too much overhead) and still sell it for less than $1200 under invoice (the reason we go out of state), then go for it! :D

So did you just find a friendly DMV person who pushed it through in spite of this?

No, I had the CARB, I ordered it with Cal emissions. On the 600 engine this is just a certification, there is no difference in the smog equipment.

Oh, I thought you meant you didn't order it with the sticker...

Yeh tell me about it, we have a high sales tax here and it's on the original purchase price before the rebate so tax is calculated on the $2500. 00 from Dodge and the $500. 00 from Farm Bureau that was never actually paid. But, I knew I would be bent over and lubricated when I got it down here. But hey, thanks to the mismanagement of our former govenor the state's broke so I guess we all have to do our part.
