To start off, "Commonwealth Dodge" in Louisville, Ky. gave some real good service, and was real nice to me. Terry McKinley, their service manager, helped me a bunch!.

I was headed for Louisville, Ky. to pull some trls. from the RV show to dlrs. in Florida. I stopped in Warrenton, Mo. to get a coffee and use restroom. When I backed out of parking spot to leave, it would not respond to pushing the throttle, no lights or anything, just no rpm. , got out opened hood, could not see anything wrong, got back in and it was ok, it was midnight then, and thought it was just a quirk, and was in a hurry, so went on down the rd. Got east of St. Louis, getting off of I-255 on to I-64, It did it again. This time the check eng. light came on, and I got the P-2121 code. Thats when I called Mark Kendrick to find out what the code was. After setting there about 30 min. it started working again, so I headed on to Louisville. Spent the night in Habstautd, In. , next morn. light was still on, but everything worked just fine. Got to Louisville, checked into Motel, and found Commonwealth Dodge just a mile away. When I got there the eng. light was off. They used their diagnostic tool, and found the p-2121 code, called Star, and they would not do anything, because the check eng. light was not on when I got to the dlr. This made me very angry, but the dlr. was not at fault. BTW the p-2121 was low voltage to the APP, or TPS. I knew there would be Dodge and Cummins reps. at the show, so went there. There was 4 DC reps. one engr. and 1 Cummins rep. there. The DC reps just looked at one another, and the Cummins rep. at least talked to me about my troubles. I told him I had 2 trls. to deliver to Florida, and one was a $90,000. 00, 40' prototype. I told him if I'm going up Mt. Eagle, and my trk. quites on me, and the trl. is damaged, something is going to hit the fan, and someone will get sued because Star would not fix my faulty trk. Finally the Cummins rep told me they were having problems with the 03 TPS, that it needed to be blown out, cleaned, and dielectric grease applied, they were getting moisture in them. He took my VIN, and told me to go back to the dlr. first thing in the morn. I got there at 8 am, and was met at the door by the service mgr. , and was told that he had a message from Star that a new sensor would be there by 10 am the next morn. It was there on time, they got me out in about 30 min. and everything is working fine for the last 4800 mi. It has 21,610 mi. so far, and is still getting stronger.

Sorry this is so long, but it made me feel good that I rattled "Star's" cage a little.

Thanks for this info, Yogi, very valuable. I seem to recall the TPS being the source of a lot of problems in early gen II Dodges. I hope we're not going to have TPS as an ongoing problem.

It also bothered me that the factory reps ignored you at first, and only responded to what turned out be be a 'known' problem after you raised the issue of liability. This makes me think the company may be avoiding this issue. If D-C doesn't make the dealers aware of of a TPS problem, how can we get service when/if the TPS goes bad?

I'm still waiting on the 48 RE but am going to get a 2003 next year. I hope there is an upstream fix of the TPS. It sounds like a simple moisture-proofing fix to me. If I ever have a problem like yours I will know where to start, thanks to you.

Good info!

Just thinking(thats dangerous for me:D )but I wonder if this is related to why my check gages light has flashed on and off before. I got over 8000 and it has done it 6 times. They can't find anything wrong. Last I heard they were waiting on a tsb from DC to tell them what was causing it. From what I have read on here there are a few trucks that have had the check gages light flash and some times you get the ding dong. Have to go back to the dealer today to get something they ordered for me and I will ask if they know anything new.

Yesterday I popped the hood and the inside front third of the hood was soaked and dripping water, we have had a little rain lately. I think because of the air intake design we are going to have water problems on a continuing basis. There was enough water to pull down the filter minder.

Did I mention the ARK is starting to float again! ;)

rbattelle, I was hopeing somone else would explain "Star" to you. My thoughts of them are, they are the "Mafia" section of DC. They say yes or no to your warranty problems. Anything that is subject to warranty goes through "Star", and they either yea, or nay it.

I sincerely hope that someone at D-C monitors the TDR website. It would be a great way for their engineers to quietly head off truck problems and create many happy customers.

This was the first time I'd heard of the 'Star' outfit too. Like most QA/QC outfits they probably have a front line of phone-answers who have a quick reference of warranty/ not warranty issues (like, 'no engine light, no action'). I doubt those people are allowed to make technical decisions.

I think Yogi got 'up the chain' a little to someone who could make a decision on the issue. I've had to do that with other companies. It is frustrating but too often necessary.

Kbarlow that's interesting about the water. The underhood systems should be able to withstand a deluge of water. I hope they put an order in to the TPS builder to include a water-resist modification. When I get my truck I might just take my TPS out and put dielectric grease on the mechanism.

Water is not the problem, Cummins rep said "condensation" was the problem. After my "fix", I drove thru Florida in the heaviest rain I have ever been thru, and no problems.

Larry

Yogi,

You had said they were 'getting moisture in them,' not condensation. Condensation is an different matter. Still, the volume of water vapor inside a sealed TPS switch is inconsequential when condensed, probably less than a gram, so I doubt that was your problem.

They talked to you about blowing it out and greasing it, but I note they replaced it. Greasing would have been a temporary fix. Hopefully you have an improved one that won't let moisture in.

Sounds like your new switch doesn't leak if you drove through all that rain.

I parked my truck for a week, it rained off and on. When I got back my check engine light was coming on and the truck was shifting funny I thought. It turned out to be the Throttle positioning sensor.

OHale, when the Cummins rep. said they were having moisture problems in the TPS plug, I told him I had not been in any kind of snow or rain for at least a month, he said that was not the problem, it was condensation that was giving them problems. Just telling what he told me. I asked the service mgr. if the new part was a different #, he said no, the same as I had.

They replaced it, cause I saw the one they took off. They did use dielectric grease when they installed the new one. The one they took off had no traces of grease on it.

DC's answer to your question... . It's more cost effective to be hush-hush on a known problem and only deal with individual cases than to replace the TPS on all 2003 trucks under a recall:rolleyes:

I would not be surprised to see a revised TPS for next years model (2004) and maybe just a TSB instead of a recall issued for the trucks having TPS condensation problems

OH trust me my friend, "Big Brother" is most likely watching... ... . but not for the reason you hope!!!

The smaller this world gets the Bigger "Big Brother" seems to get.

Sorry, thats another subject that doesn't need to be here at TDR.

Good old Big Brother. Short term gain versus long-time customers? You'd think the business types would prefer the latter.

Sorry to sound so argumentative, Yogi. You've given me a valuable bit of knowledge if/when I have this problem.

Years ago people posted on TDR they were having leaking fuel return lines. One day at work I couldn't get the mighty dually to start. I remembered the posts and tried the primer, which was soft. I hand primed it and got home, and replaced the line. TDR to the rescue! When I get my truck I'll make sure my toolbox has some dielectric grease in it.

BTW I'm zeroing in on some dealerships in NH. One said the first 48REs will go to the Texas market so it might be a wait. I may just start the dickering process and order. I want to have a fine new truck like you guys!

Is this a common problem? Mine has done it twice since I got the TSB for the transmission check valve fixed. I have just over 1000 miles on it...

My "check guages" light has been flashing too. I have been telling them about it, but nothing shows on the diagnostic read out, so what can they do? They are going to talk to star about it Mon.
