Does anyone have information regarding rules (or rules of thumb) for maximum safe trailer length? There is plenty on weight capacity and tongue weight for our trucks but there seems to be little information regarding length.

I have a 2010 single rear wheel 2500 with Airlift bags in the rear. I am buying a new gooseneck car hauler. Longer is better (TWSS) but too long is not. I have seen many people pulling 36' - 40' gooseneck/5th wheel trailers with SRW trucks, but more than that seems to require a DRW. I am seeing a lot of nice 44' and 48' trailers but don't feel comfortable spending the money until I know if I can pull it.

Most of them weigh about 8,000 lbs and my load will be about 4,000, so I will be well under my truck's 14.5k towing capability. But what determines the safe trailer length?

Thanks.

Maximum trailer tow rating is only one piece of the puzzle. The limitation for a SRW truck will almost always be the trailer's pin/hitch weight vis-a-vis the truck's GVWR and/or rear GAWR.

I pull a 30' trailer and really don't understand what your question is? if your weights are correct and your truck is good shape, and your length is legal, then the only thing that I would be worried about is driving skills. Do YOU feel comfortable pulling a long wagon?

Then I guess that answers my question. If weights are ok (they are) then length isn't so important. I am comfortable with it, I've been pulling goosenecks and tags up to 40' for twenty years, but nothing over 40' yet. I had heard from word of mouth that it would be too much lateral force (on a windy day, for example) for a SWR truck to comfortably handle and I was looking for information to confirm or deny this statement.
