So I'm drivin' along,... singin' a song,... well I was until I leaned on the throttle a little bit and then this happened. :{:{:{ Cracked case, broken top cover, half of the teeth on fifth gear sheared off, and a slightly mangled countershaft. Can I ever stop working on this truck and enjoy driving it???#@$%!#@$%!#@$%!

Chris, what are you complaining about? You got to drive it and enjoy it. Now it's time to work on it again! ;)

What do you think happened to it?

Well guys, I was hoping for some words of encouragement. :-laf

I don't know what happened. I've pulled some heavy loads with it and its been fine. I guess that it was the combo of bigger tires, and fifth gear with the GV on, my final drive ratio is pretty low and the Cummins was coming on strong. With the new tires, I'm running 80mph at ~1700RPM.

Does anyone remember what the consenses is on endplay?

Hi Chris. I was wondering what happened in the trans. That is very depressing to see.

The other truck do good on the tow back home?

Oh wow what a drag..... That blows man. Good luck. Don't get rid of the shift forks from that old top (I know you won't ;-) Good Luck.

Chris, IIRC, it's not endplay, it's preload. It's very important to have them preloaded correctly, and there's a difference between new and used bearings too. DP has been thru this alot, and Michael has too. Those 2 are the guys in the know. Maybe if you offer an adult beverage or 2 (cases) Daniel can be convinced to give you a hand, if he's nearby. :-laf

What Pete said. Incorrect preload on these things is one of the things that gives them their bad name. A lot of guys don't know how to correctly set the preload (myself being one of them) and the transmission doesn't make it far.

Daniel is the one who rebuilt mine. For what it's worth, all the shafts spin real nice while the transmission is sitting on the floor... ... .

I tried calling you back last night, and got into a good game of voice mail tag.

I agree and say something got in between the gears to cause a failure like that. Gotta go through some of my old posts to find out the spacifics. Its been a few days since I've been into mine. Sorry, I don't have much for spares either.

Michael

James is the one to ask about the transmission maint. (1stgenforever)

He had a nice write-up on the importance of bearing preload. I recall it must be checked time to time with the trans in the truck and I think it could be adjusted while in there... ..... ??... ... ..... maybe??

Anyway, the bearings are what make and, ah,,,,,,, break them.

0. 000 preload for re-used bearings and . 006" to . 008" shimmed preload on NEW timkin bearings.

The cause for most of the failures out of the factory was from when Getrag was preloading the shim packs too tight . 030" - . 045" +++ IIRC and it would cause the getrag to heat up, expand the main/countershaft, load the main bearings too much, spin the cups in the case, and party over! Looking over your carnage pics again, looks to me like this may of happened, and caused the case to split the way it did. how much did you preload the shafts last time you built the Getrag? Mysteryman made a great post about this on TDR years ago...

I'm back baby

Well, its back in the truck! I guess that I'll find out how long it lasts this time.

FWIW, I shoulda bought that press a loooong time ago.

Thanks again Andy, TDR members are the best! Everything seems to be fine so far. It seems to me that the earlier versions of the Getrag have a little different placement when downshifting from 5th to 4th, but I just gotta get used to it.
