Well, it's pins and needles time again, we leave in 4 days for other side of the Divide.



The trucks waxed, camper shell is ready to set on and all the gear is in a pile ready to be loaded Saturday. Leave midnight Sunday for the second (combo) season.



Now if this stinking wind would just stop blowing so I can burn a few more rounds at some paper I'd be ready to go.



Anyone else headed to Colorado next week?

Welcome to Colorado! Should be a good season for you - we got lots of elk. What part of the state are you headed to?

JW, we hunt southwest of Montrose in unit 62, a overthe counter area. Gotta work hard to find a little isolation.



This will likely be the last year for this spot as it goes to a draw next year and I don't have enough preferance points to draw one of the hot units.

I am familiar with that area - pretty busy bear country too. How did you find out it will be a draw area next year?



I worked for an outfitter one year in unit 65, across the highway, up on Storm King Mountain and around Billy Creek State Wildlife Area. I love that whole area, but for the last few years I've been staying closer to home.

My son and 4 friends are headed to South Fork for Elk hunting.

Have fun when you get here. Of course Elk hunting is always fun. I leave in the morning for the first season. Man, I can hardly wait.

MGordon, good luck. Wish I was going with you and could figure out a way to stay for the second hunt. Remember to save a few for seed.



JW, every few days I access the Montrose Daily Press and do a search on mule deer and elk just to see if there is any news. In July they were reporting on a series of public meetings the DOW was conducting concerning Unit 62. The DOW referes to 62 as one of it's Elk management units and the numbers of quality bulls is below desirable levels and the number of hunters is much higher than in Unit 61, right across Divide road.



I haven't read the article in a while, but 61 has something like 1700 hunters, a kill ratio of about 50%, and 62 has 7200 or so hunters (combined count of all seasons) with a 15% harvest ratio. They're looking to improve the 62 herd, much to the chagrin of the folks in Montrose who see lots of money "not" coming into town.

I heard that MOPARGUY and his buddie did good hunting this year and shot a massive bull elk on opening morning, they got it gutted out and started dragging it out by the hind legs and another hunter suggested that if they were to drag it by the horns and go with the grain of the hair that there would be less resistence and actually be easier.

MOPARGUY and his partner said they were aware of this BUT they would then be going the wrong way from their camp hehehe ... ... ..... OK I SAID I WAS TEASING
