I just put a TST #6 Power kit in my ride. Man, what a ride!!! Now I need a filter/intake kit (is that right, i'm an old gas gearhead?). Where can I look?

I would NOT get a BHAF because of the size, have to change them all the time and u get hot air. I would get a stock size AFE or K&N filter, or Scotty II for cooler air, or AFE mega cannon for extreme air flow and cooler air.

The hot air problem with a BHAF is not really a problem most of the time. I ran a temp probe on the out side of my BHAF at the closest place to the turbo and at all times except a dead stop it registered 10-15 deg higher max than ambient. Pulling a long upgrade while towing might send it up some but otherwise no big deal. Mine was on for a year without becoming excessively dirty and was replaced only because I wanted to try a AFE which seems to flow more air as the black smoke has diminished quite a bit.

I have an year and 30,000 miles on my BHAF. It still isn't even close to being plugged up. I like it a lot more that the K&N R0880 that I had.

I agree with Reb. B, free flowing air box filter works great for me.

Scotty on my 3500 is great, but not many folks can put up with the cab noise especially on a long drive.

I have a BHAF and it made a noticeable difference in my EGTs while towing and running the interstates over my factory box with paper filter.

However since I have the BOMBing bug (see sig!Oo. ) I plan on upgrading to most likely a Scotty II (with AFE filter) for the cool air it pulls in, however I'm still back and forth between AFE MegaCannon setup or Scotty II because I want to be able to think over the WHINE it will make my turbo do!:confused: :{

Well this is what i come up with, . . the Scotty II will pull cooler air. The afe mega cannon will pull more air and be fairly cool. They are both loud with a big turbo. I had the B-1 and PDR 40 sucking through both and they both scream, i thinking that the Scotty II is a little more loader though. If u don't like the extra noise and plan to block off the top air hole going the the cowl, then i would not use a Scotty II and i would use the AFE mega cannon. Since both filters are AFE, i talked to them at the SEMA show. They said that the mega cannon will flow more for two reasons. The first is the vellosity stack inside the mega cannon filter and the second is that the Scotty II is a little restrictive around the filter. So, with this in mind, . . i would use the mega cannon on high HP needs. I would not use it on every application though. If u are not heavy fueled and are running and don't plan on running high HP, then i would stick with the box type AFE or K&N. They work great up to about 250-300 HP or so.

I didn't like the size of the BHAF so i called cummins and asked them to find one with a four inch intake and a little smaller than the BHAF. They came up with a fleetguard AH 1141 That looks just like a BHAF but is a little smaller, 8 1/2 dia by 11 inches long, i make a box for it last agust and a turbo cover works great and it only cost 32 bucks. As for EGT its down to 400 at 70 mph with a 3500 five speed 3. 54 gears 288 rwhp. Thats post turbo temp. Richard

from what I have noticed, is that the SCOTTY II pulls cooler air, but not enough, therefore giving me higher EGT's... . I ran the same route, with it on, as well as with it off. . EGT's were cooler and performance was better without it on. I would like to get a megacannon, but its just not in the budget right now. I would never put another paper junk filter back on this truck (No offense to the BHAF people), just My opinion.

AFE Megga Cannon

Since this subject is going, I'm wondering about increased noise from using the high flow air filters. I presently have the Amsoil high flow filter in the stock box, and did notice a slight increase in noise. I'm considering getting a AFE megga cannon, and just wondering if I do, should I expect considerably more noise than I have now? I imagine it would be more, but was wondering if anyone else have changed air filter systems hoping to find the one that best suits there needs and noise levels.

kkriz,

The first (and free) step is to remove the plastic boot from between the air box and the fender. This will keep your filter minder from being pulled down which is all you really need for airflow.

It looks like air filter options (like clutches, torque convertors, oil and bypass filters) are becoming a hot topic.

Do some searches on the filter options mentioned above. You'll find hours of reading. Think about where you want to end up powerwise when you are done moddiing your engine and buy accordingly.

A BHAF will flow enough air for most applications (500 hp?). A K&N is a bit louder and the loudest option (and best flowing) is the Mega Cannon.

As you mention in your profile, exhaust flow improvements are probably nearing the top of your list. How are your EGT's with the mods?

kkriz ... In regards to the BHAF, it works for me. I'm backing that up with facts.

First of all, it allows the turbo to spool up faster. Now I'm talking definite "wow, what is that?" type feeling. As a matter of fact, I took it back off & put the stock box on with the clean K&N. I couldn't believe the difference!!

Second, w/o the heat shield, it dropped EGT 50 degrees. That's on a 90 something degree day.

It's cheap & super easy to install.

This might answer your question. I've found with any filter mod there is a noise increase. What I can tolerate for an hour is totally unacceptable on an all day drive.

Better not get a PDR HX40! You will hate it! I love the sound of mine, but if the noise bothers you, that is NOT your turbo!

I had the K&N RE0880 on my truck and thought it was great until I took a 3 hour run. The turbo had a high pitch noise that really got to me. I changed to the BHAF and the high pitch went away. Still have lots of turbo whine, but it doesn't bother me on 5 hour runs.

Oops! I forgot the Scotty II air filter option. Also very loud!

I have a PDR HX-40 with a Fleetguard BHAF and it is not as loud as a stock box with the silencer ring removed.
