I found a 1991 3/4 ton 4x4 It's the 2 tone grey and white with the LE package. The truck is a 5-speed with 200k. It has a Stillwater flatbed with weather guard tool boxes on sides of the bed. Looks like 4-6 inches of lift leaf springs very heavy stack of springs. The truck had stock height tires on it that need to be replaced. The interior is very dirty. Starts and runs fine. I think the transmission is shot. It will not move at all forwards or backwards. That sounds like the input shaft to me. Is there a general rule of thumb to how much that costs to fix. The truck does not have a intercooler. One of my questions is how much of a factor is this. What else is different on this model of engine? I have a 1992 so my truck has an intercooler. Also what is a truck like this worth? The body is in really good shape. The grill is cracked but I'm sure i could get one out of the junk yard. I can get the truck for 2k. I know it's worth that. Do you think the truck could bring $4500 fixed and running good. I don't want to buy it fix it then not be able to get my money back if I want to sell it.

Thanks Scott

if you go back with a get(your money out)rag 5spd, it will be a large sum of cashola from what I have seen. Way to go would be with a NV4500, but that too is a bunch of CASH. As far as the truck being worth 2k, I think so, but on the same token, you could probably find one in similar condition that works for about the same it would cost you to buy the broke one and fix it. 2cents

I agree, unless you really need to buy a truck and fix it. I would hold out for an intercooled version. Better cooling sytem, and better performance, if set up correctly, because of the intercooler.

Until you find out what is wrong with the transmission, you really wont know how much youll have in it. Is it worth 2k. IMO yes. As far as the intercooled vs non-intercooled. I have had both and know of no difference between the two in performance wise. If you plan on keeping it and doing a bunch of mods to it, inter-cooled would be better.

You could buy a reman trans for (last I checked) 12-1400. But they are getting harder to find. A lot of people talk down on the getrag trans, but I have had good luck with them, but at the same time, dont do any heavy towing... . under 10k.

The truck is worth 2k. I would definitely buy it for that. But the only way to make money is to salvage it out. The parts are worth more than the running truck. If you really like working on the Dodges then you can buy it and do the repairs and get your money out of it, but you won't make any/much profit.

I do see a slight trend upward on the price of nice trucks. You get it, clean it really good, hold it for a while and make a little on it. But in case you have not pulled a transmission/transfercase, let me assure you that it isn't much fun. If you get too deep into the money, you'll find that potential buyers can get in a new truck for little down and monthly payments that they can make, but can't seem to make one large lump purchase. Bankers don't think these trucks are worth the going price as it is. Four years ago when I bought my low miles 93 at 9500, the banker straight out said I was paying too much. Course she was one of the new breed that had the fifteen minute traning course and the standard banking procedure instruction book.

The 'not move at all' could be something other than the transmission but if it is, (and if it won't move in fourth) it will be super serious to rebuild. 12 to 14 hundred on a rebuilt is based on your transmission being repairable. From what you describe, it may not be anything but a case.

Same Situation

Guys:

I'm in the same boat up here; A buddy of mine has a 93 extended cab with a dead transmission (auto). Being a truck from the salt belt, it does have some rust and requires some TLC. We were throwing around some numbers last night, I said 2k he said 4k, so I'm assuming I could pick it up for around 3k. It has 200k on it, which is about 113,000 miles.

I know its worth more in parts, but I am doing rebuild on my dually, so I could essentially take the transmission our of the dead one and have it done and could effectively kill two birds with one stone... ... ... what the heck do I do with another vehicle though... ... . never mind, just ranting.

I'm located in the St. Louis area (35 miles south). Doing the transmission and transfercase isn't that big of a deal. I have access to a lift and have the transmission jack. The problem is finding the time.

Maybe I should ask this. Does anyone what to swap to a NV4500 and sell a guy a used getrag.

Thanks for the input on everything.
