Hello,
I asked this question of the Turbo Diesel Register staff and they didn't know of any places that do complete restorations that they could recommend. They said that they always send out their work one job at a time. I am looking for a "one stop shop" to handle my rig.
Forgive me if this is a little long. I am not looking for a show truck but a good looking daily driver. My idea of a great restoration shop would be one that would have the skill and experience to guide me down the path to achieve my goals. That includes making suggestions concerning things that I might not be aware of on my own. Restoration shops that the readers have had personal experience with are what I am after, not third party accounts or "I read about a restoration shop in an advertisement somewhere."
I own a 1991 D250 (non intercooled). I am seriously considering having this truck professionally restored. I picked it up here in Wisconsin for $4500 a couple of years ago. It has about 140,000 real miles and it is totally stock. It is also fairly clean and while it has some rust it is not all that bad, especially for an old Wisconsin truck.
I really like the fact that I have a bullet proof truck (I did the KDP mod myself) that does not have all of the emission headaches. It has all of the power / torque that I need and at 64 years of age I want it to outlast me. I figure with the price of new trucks I am far better off and money ahead restoring my classic. Besides, I really like the looks of the originals.
I need some body work, paint, the A/C needs to be made functional, etc. It has the 727 transmission and I am also looking at either a conversion to a stick or an over drive / under drive unit to work with the existing auto. I also want to convert to a locking or limited slip rear end to help in the snow. I never intend to tow anything really heavy with this truck but I do own a truck camper. That is the kind of use it will see.
Any advice on good restoration places will be greatly appreciated. I am not looking for a cheap restoration but a place that does quality work and stands behind what they do. They don't have to be local and I am more than happy to give them the time and the money to do it right.
