Looking for a table saw

I looked for a used unisaw for awhile too---broke down and bought a new one with the 52" Bessimere (sp) fence for myself for christmas. It is sweet to use. Just today I finished making a "outfeed" table system for it.

First project was a set of "skybeds" for 8 yr. old twin grandsons, sort of like bunk-beds except that both beds are 5'6" s off the floor and each has a desk and book shelves built under the bed and each had under bed lighting. The are in an L shape and fit in a corner of their room. MY own idea, but the twins think its cool

I stuck with a 1 1/2 h. p. unisaw for fifteen years. It ripped less flesh out of my body when it kicked back.

Good luck finding one used, most folks that have a Unisaw hold on to them, the older the better.

Big advantage of the Unisaw over the Powermatic is the ability to find them on the used market. There are simply more of them out there. Although either would be a great choice.

I am a fond user of a 5 hp Powermatic. It used to be that the Powermatic was the only heavy table saw that swings left, but now, Delta makes a left swing saw too ... I guess they finally learned that it's safer.

My choice is Powermatic but a Unisaw is ok too if can find one without too many board feet on them. I often find Unisaws for sale that are virtually used up. The trunions get worn and the arbors are out of true.

I don't have one but...

Having once been toying with buying a Unisaw I remember an article in one of the wood working magazines. There used to be another option that was well written about; General. I believer they were made in Canada.

Check out Jet tables saws to, we just got a brand new one at the cabinet place that I work part time and it's as good or better than the Delta Unisaws we have and about $300 to $400 cheaper.

General

Genaral has a very comprehensive line of wood working machinery. The 10" saw they make is bit heavier than the Unisaw and has dust collector port and a hinged door on the base to make cleaning easy. Here is a link to their home page:

On thing to be careful of with the Unisaw is the motor voltage, the motor that is used has a custom foot on it and is worth about half as much as the saw.

Hemi, as stated above... ... ... . Jet makes a very nice cabinet saw. I bought one about a year or so ago. Have run 1000 ft or so, through with no problems, well made saw. The only other saw I would have purchased, if I had the cake, would have been a powermatic, but at the time I couldn't afford the extra $900.



BTW, if you find a saw you like, but it doesn't have a lone enough fence, I have a 52" Beismeyer for sale.



If you get a used saw, really check it out, as stated above, most of the ones on the market are pretty well worn.
