Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice on windshield replacement. Recently, I noticed a small crack in my windshield, and I’m considering replacing it before it gets any worse. I’ve read some mixed reviews about the quality of replacement windshields and the potential risks involved, so I thought I’d reach out to the community for your input.

What should I look for when choosing a replacement windshield? Are there certain brands or types that stand out for durability and clarity? I’m also wondering if there are any risks to getting it replaced by a local shop versus an auto dealership.

Additionally, I’d love to know if anyone has experience with insurance coverage for windshield replacement—does it usually cover the full cost, or are there hidden fees?

Any tips or recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I always go thru insurance. Insurance covers road damage and all you pay is the cost of the comprehensive deductible.

If you have any thru the windshield sensors request OEM glass. It’s always been approved for me.

I had it replaced in the driveway from a guy that had good reviews on Google. He used a Pilkington windshield and worked carefully and up to my standards without even telling him.
Would go this way again if in need. Price was 450 $.

Pilkington, PPG or any US or Canadian units are good. MOPAR for my 15 RAM. $100 Comp deductible. If you let your insurance decide it will be junk.

I have a Auto glass guy come to my house and let him do his job. I made sure he brought me a quality windshield , cant remember the brand name.

I Installed a transmission in my old truck while he did my windsheild :D

.

call your insurance company and tell em a dump truck threw a rock into your windshield.. and they will send you someone who will change it in your driveway. Depends on what state you live in what it will cost.. since I live in FL, it comes out to FREE... FL must have a fund somewhere to blame dump trucks in this state because windshields are free.

as far as quality, who can really tell the difference between 1 piece of tempered glass and another?

I have AAA insurance and it includes full safety glass with zero deductible and they refer you to Safelite for the repair.

front windshields are not tempered they are laminated. Like anything else glass has a different degree of quality. I commuted in NW WA and believe me the cheap one pitted far more quickly.

If it's wavy (the curve is uneven) it'll be noticable.

Then there is the clarity. Nothing worse than heading into the sun and seeing a laminate haze affecting detailed vision that should not be there, or an upper tint band that is a cloudy translucent instead of transparent. Cheaper is not necessarily better. Quality should be the top choice for safety and longevity.

Yep, I commuted low to the ground for 300,000 miles with my 81 VW Diesel PU. The import windshield was sandblasted very quickly and when the sun hit it just right it was BAD.

in my case since it is "FREE" even if it is a low quality windshield ( and I dont think it is) I can get another one free. :)
